Pelfrey Unhappy with Front Office, Deadline Deals
Mike Pelfrey gave his opinion on the front office decision to trade Carlos Beltran yesterday.
“I understand that if you want to get something back for him you have to trade him,” Pelfrey told The NY Post before the Mets beat the Reds 4-2 last night. “But in the same sense I would think if we ended up getting rid of him, the front office’s view is that we don’t have a chance, because he gives us our best chance to win. If he’s not here, then they felt we can’t rebound from where we’re at.”
Pelfrey has been with the Mets his entire career, now playing his 6th season with the club.
“In the past we’ve kind of been close, and moves are kind of made at the deadline where guys are kind of like ‘We could have used this, we could have used that and been right there,’ ” Pelfrey said. “It hasn’t happened a couple of times, and I know it’s kind of gotten to some guys.”
Pelfrey didn’t go as far as to name what guys in particular it has “gotten to,” but his longest tenured teammates are David Wright, Jose Reyes and Beltran.
Pelfrey wishes the best for Beltran. “For his sake, I hope he goes wherever he goes and wins it all,” Pelfrey said.

………especially when coupled with his pot-shot at the Wilpons from earlier on in the year; suggesting they sit in on the Media 101-type classes with the players next year.
Good for Pelfrey; probably expedites his departure though – and again, even better in that he won’t have to work with Dan Warthen anymore.

Its amazing Pelfrey is one of the main reasons the Mets would be sellers at the deadline.
He is a choke artiste who every time a batter gets on base or an error is made behind him crawls into his shell and the other team goes on to have a big inning.
Pelf is a player with talent from the neck down whom should show the same guts on the mound that he tires to portray in the press.
Big Pelf, I didnt know you had it in ya. Now take those baseballs on the field with you. I agree with everything he said, the mets should have picked up piazza from the A’s in 06, he could have pinch hit instead of Floyd. But he has been a mess on the mound. If he stays with the mets passed this year he has to be treated as a #4 or 5 starter until he proves otherwise for a full season and comes back and does it again or else he is jay soe.
Big Pelf is right on the ball, and altho Rob is right about his poor season, Big Pelf was one of the reasons the Mets were in the hunt until the All Star break last year, much more than this year. so he’s right. In 11 the Mets dump their closer and best power hitter, last year they gifted the team with the return of Ollie, in 08 they basically slept in 07 they brought in Castillo and forgot they had no pen. So he’s right and Collins is an idiot for his comments about playing hard or be gone. Half these guys or more would be glad to be playing for a buyer rather than a seller.
Would have been a good trick, considering I was with the Padres in 2006.

This is nitpicky, but before coffee the way you have written your first sentence here is confusing as the mets did not, in fact, trade beltran yesterday. Welcome aboard!
The problem is that the Mets have few chips to offer if they took the role of buyer. Unless they wanted to deal part of their future for the present or gamble on a reclamation project like Harden for example, there’s little out there that’s any better than what they already have.
I don’t think they should deal prospects at this time and I’m not completely sold on dealing Beltran. I honestly think instead of moving Beltran right now Murph is the one who should be shopped and could bring in return a decent starter or another arm for the bullpen.
Since the 5-13 debacle, the Mets are 46-38 and continuing to play .550 ball or better the rest of the way puts them right in the thick of a WC race full of mediocre teams.

Well Big Pelf has a chance to walk it like he talks tomorrow. You don’t want Beltran traded Mike?? Pitch like an ace tomorrow and make the pending decision to jettison Carlos a bit tougher because frankly your 5-9 4.73 mark so far hasn’t helped matters at all.
Just Pelf* doesn’t seem to know the difference between contenders and pretenders. In 2004, the Mets were pretenders, yet they thought they were contenders. The result: trading Kazmir for Zambrano.
Does Pelf think the Mets should trade Beltran for prospects, or trade prospects for somebody new? This team was not built to win in 2011. Going 51-51 does not change that.

Let me ask you something Murph, this team is 52-51 not being built to win. So if we were built to win do you think its possible we would have 3-5 maybe 6 more wins and be less then a handfull of games out of WC lead?
Hi Mike, to answer your question: yes, I thinks its possible.
I also do not believe that a .500 team is a contender.
Don’t get me wrong, I like this team. I also think they are over-achieving. If they over achieve by another 6 more game over .500, they still would not make the playoffs.
They are handcuffed by bad contracts from the Minaya administration. How much money is locked up on Santana, Beltran, Bay, Castillo & Perez? About $75 million this year.
Murph I am not trying to pick a fight, but Santana and Beltran are not bad contracts, and even though Bay is you cant blame anyone for that. I cant believe 20 million is stoping this team from improving and its off the books after this season anyway.
Maybe I am just to optimistic but I am with Beltran on what he said about this team a couple weeks ago. They have been a better team then there results show. In 07 and 08 i thought they had the best team in the NL. And I dont believe they are over achieving this year, what team below them is better then they are? What team besides philly is that much better. The braves arent that good they have better piching but its not night and day we can certainly catch up to there level.
