Tuesday Afternoon Mets Links (Blake Forsythe Edition)

ESPN New York – As previously posted, Brooklyn Cyclones manager Wally Backman is a popular guy with his former players.

Mets Minor League Blog – Toby Hyde has a running thread to cover day two of the amateur draft. With the #89 pick, the Mets have selected University of Tennessee catcher Blake Forsythe.

ESPN – Karl Ravech thinks the NL East is MLB’s future “power division,” based on money and the media. By that rationale, the Mets should be on their way to facing the Yankees in this fall’s World Series for the 19th time in 20 years. Let’s go Mets! [via MetsBlog]

Daily News – It sounds like MLB is still taking this “Ollie Perez is injured” gag a little too seriously. Lighten up, guys!

CBS Sports – A preview of the Mets-Padres series that starts tonight. Check back here at MetsToday at about 5pm for the Gameday Open Thread.

Quote of the Day: Dan Uggla on Wally Backman

Next week, Wally Backman will begin managing the Brooklyn Cyclones. Backman has been managing in independent and affiliated minor league baseball since the mid-1990s.

ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin has interviewed several of Backman’s former players to give a sense of what kind of manager he is. Here is Dan Uggla’s take:

“Well, obviously he’s very passionate with protecting his players,” Uggla said. “I’ll tell you what, if you play for Wally Backman, you’re going to be able to run through a brick wall, because we have the same emotions toward him as he has toward us. I mean, I would have run through a brick wall for him. Everybody is playing hard — I think playing above their ability — when they play for a guy like that. [ESPN New York]

I have to say, Rubin’s article is the most accurate reporting I’ve ever seen regarding the passion that Backman’s players have for their manager.
