Mets – Twins Game Postponed

According to MLB.com, today’s game between the Mets and Twins has been postponed due to inclement weather in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There is light snow and rain in the forecast with temperatures in the 30s, and a wind-chill in the teens.

The game has been rescheduled for August 19th, right after the Mets conclude a left coast swing and just prior to hosting the Braves in Flushing. Interestingly, the Mets had both that Tuesday as well as that Thursday (August 22nd) slated as off-days. So no worries, they’ll still get a day off that week (pending further postponements).

Further, the weather in Colorado this week is looking even worse than it is in Minnesota, with snow expected on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with temperatures dipping into the 20s and single-digit wind-chill factors.

We can craw all we want about poor scheduling, but in the end this could very well be the best thing for the Mets. The old Braves had a phrase that went “Spahn, Sain, and pray for rain”; perhaps the Mets can go with “Harvey and Niese is nice, followed by snow and ice.” Or something …

Link Roundup: All About Harvey

Matt Harvey

Matt Harvey pitched another great game last night, even without his best command. His fastball darted all over the place, his slider stayed up in the zone, and his changeup was inconsistent.  Yet his line looked like this:

Pitching IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA BF Pit Str
Matt Harvey, W (2-0) 7 3 1 1 2 9 0 0.64 26 110 66

One could picture Harvey afterward wearing a red Nike golf shirt saying casually “I didn’t have my A-game today” as he takes a sip of water.

He did it on a national stage, on ESPN, in the home of the Mets’ biggest rival, against a fading ace, Roy Halladay.  If one were prone to superlatives, one could say a torch might have been passed from one dominant right-hander to another last night.

Not since a 1950 movie starring James Stewart has the name “Harvey” created so much buzz.  But the Mets’ pitcher is no invisible rabbit.  He sure looks like the real thing.

Of course, we as Mets fans will always have the ability to find a cloud in every silver lining.  Is there such a thing as too many strikeouts?  Remember when Dwight Gooden tried to pitch to contact more in 1986 in order to lower his pitch count?  One could argue that limited his effectiveness.  One could also argue there were other factors.

In other news, how odd is it that the Mets are 5-2, but have no saves?

Also, a couple of veteran pitchers have found new life with the Mets.  Sidewinder Greg Burke could end up being a weapon out of the Mets bullpen, and well-traveled Scott Rice has shown us the human side of a replacement player.

The Mets are back in Philly tonight for a game featuring the Ben Affleck-approved matchup of Gee/Lee.  Keep checking out Mets today for all the latest.

Is Jose Fernandez More Unique than Zack Wheeler?

jose-fernandez

In need of an emergency starter, the Miami Marlins tapped 20-year-old phenom Jose Fernandez from A-ball. When asked if there was any economical concern over starting Fernandez’s arbitration clock, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria stated in the Miami Herald,

“So what? We’ll deal with it. He’s unique.”

Makes one wonder if the Mets believe Zack Wheeler is “unique,” doesn’t it?

Link Roundup: Minor League Openers and Monkeys

Sure, the Mets lost yesterday, but I’m still fired up about Matt Harvey.

Triple-A Las Vegas started their season last night, and Zack Wheeler struggled with his command.  Considering how little he pitched in March, this is still his Spring Training, so there’s no need to panic.  C Travis d’Arnaud went 2 for 4 and 2B Wilmer Flores had a 3 for 3 night.

Double-A Binghamton also opened their season, and starting pitcher Rafael Montero looked every bit as polished as people in the Mets organization say he is.  He struck out nearly half of the batters he faced, allowing just a pair of singles, and tossing 75% of his pitches for strikes (63 of 84).

As for the parent club, they have an opportunity to continue their fast start with the retooling Marlins coming to Queens this weekend.  In order to do so, Jeremy Hefner is going to have to prove he belongs in the major league rotation.  This is especially important considering Shaun Marcum seems to come down with a new malady every day.

Loge 13 has an interesting piece on the designs of the “convertible” Shea Stadium.

And finally, here’s Orioles slugger Chris Davis with a monkey.

The Mets begin their weekend series with the Marlins tonight at Citi Field.  Stay tuned to Mets Today for coverage.
