Did the Mets Overreact to Wheeler’s Second Start?

Does it make sense to change a pitcher’s mechanics after two major league starts?

That’s what pitching coach Dan Warthen did. It was in response to Zack Wheeler’s second start in which he was apparently tipping his pitches. Mets TV analyst Ron Darling noticed that Wheeler was slowing down his motion when he threw his curveball. He made it a point to say he didn’t slow down his motion on his slider, just the curve. So was that worth an immediate mechanical adjustment?

Link Roundup: Davis, Prospects, and The 7 Line

It’s time for our second annual “Should The Mets Demote Ike Davis?” discussion. Rumor has it, demotion is once again a possibility for the struggling first baseman, just as it was last year at this time. Davis somehow pulled it together in June of 2012 and kept himself in the majors, finishing the season with 32 home runs. If it’s possible, Ike looks even more lost this year, however. Davis has a microscopic .487 OPS through 40 games this year. After his 40th game last year, he had a .518 OPS (which is only slightly less awful).

Adding insult to injury, Davis made a boneheaded play that cost the Mets at least one run in the first inning of last night’s game.

Also, according to Andy Martino of the Daily News, Ruben Tejada and Jordany Valdespin may be on the same flight to Las Vegas in the near future.

Meanwhile, there’s a new Mets minor league blog in town, created by the good folks over at Mets Merized Online. Check out their story on RHP  prospect Noah Syndergaard.

In the good news department, T-Shirt purveyor Darren Meenan has done a great job of organizing large groups of Mets fans to attend games at Citi Field. This past weekend, he got 505 Mets fans from all around the country (and from two other countries) to attend the three-game set at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

When all is said and done, isn’t that what baseball is about? People getting together to watch ballgames. Of course, it would be a lot more fun if the Mets were winning…

Ike Davis is the Key to Mets Offense

Ike Davis K

Ike Davis strikes out on Sunday during a key moment in the game.

OK, you’re probably reading the headline and thinking, “more like ‘Seven Guys Not Slumping at the Same Time is the Key to Mets Offense.'”  Yes, the Mets are not exactly the reincarnation of the 1927 Yankees.

They don’t have an ideal leadoff hitter or a steady center fielder or right fielder.  Ruben Tejada has been nearly as unspectacular with the bat has he has been with the glove this year, and Daniel Murphy, after a hot start, has slumped mightily.  On April 25th, he was batting .346/.388/.538.  Since then, he’s hit only .130/.161/.167.

It seems in late April, everyone went into a slump following their hot start.  But the Mets need a stabilizing presence in the middle of the lineup to mitigate poor performance from the rest of the team – let’s say…a power-hitting left-handed bat.  Someone like Ike Davis.

28 Games Later: The State of the 2013 Mets

sandy640_g74t6twp_4bv3zjtz

28 games are in the books in 2013 – 28 embarrassing, encouraging, disastrous, delightful, hopeless and hopeful games.  One night, a fan could go from swearing off his beloved Mets for good, while another game brings about a glimmer of hope.  But the Mets have given us no reason to believe that 2013 edition of this team will deliver anything more than a glimmer.

Link Roundup: Harvey Day #5

Happy Matt Harvey Day!  Matt Harvey (4-0, 0.93 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, 9.9 SO/9) takes the mound against…well, who cares? It’s Matt Harvey Day.

But seriously, it’s Ted Lilly and the Dodgers at Citi Field.

There’s lots of reaction to last night’s loss.  Mark (Bleepin’) Ellis Chippered the Mets with a pair of home runs, and a hot shot that knocked Jon Niese on his butt and out of the game.  Niese is day-to-day and says he’ll make his next start.  We shall see.

Josh Edgin got lit up last night and now sports a 10.80 ERA.  Terry Collins is concerned.  Edgin’s fastball was straight and his slider was a cement mixer.  Could Robert Carson, who did yeoman’s work on short notice after replacing the injured Niese, be in line to replace Edgin?  Shaun Marcum is due to be activated on Saturday, and someone in the bullpen is going to have to head out to Vegas.  Or maybe another answer could come from within.

Jack Leathersich continued his scoreless streak in Binghamton last night.  The Leather Rocket is slight of build, but has 15 Ks in 10 innings this year.  Perhaps his time won’t come this year, but we may see him in Queens soon.

The Mets have a lot of flaws, that’s really not news.  But let’s just hold our horses.

It’s Matt Harvey Day.

Blog Roundup: Getting Chewed Up at Wrigley

The Mets have run into another losing streak, having dropped 4 in a row.  They now sit at 39-36, 4.5 games back of the Nationals.  They lost a couple of tough 1-run games to the Yankees at Citi, but then dropped 2 games (and a few routine pop ups and grounders) to the lowly Cubs.  They’ve recovered from streaks like this before this year, but every Mets fan is secretly dreading “The Big One.”  The losing streak from which they can’t come back.
