The Mets have been chasing Luis Castillo for what, four years? He came to mind while putting together the article, but the fact is, the Twins have no motivation to trade him --- unless they fall out of the pennant race come July. Next year he'll be 32, which is young compared to Valentin and Easley, but far from youthful. Maybe the Mets will try for him again, but as he approaches his mid-30s, and his speed and range deteriorate, his value decreases accordingly.

Delgado will be fine (I hope and pray!). Even if he isn't, the Mets have little choice but to allow him to work out of his slump. No matter how poorly he's performing, you simply can't bench Delgado --- not this year, anyway.

Though if we want to play pretend, what about moving Shawn Green to first (he's played there before) and promoting Lastings Milledge when he's fully recovered from his foot injury? Wouldn't that be an ironic twist ...

Good article. I like the talk about Cantu, who definitely has potential. Same for Grudzielanek. And let's face it, both guys would be bottom of the order bats who would just be asked to play good to great defense and contribute just enough hitting out of the #8 batting spot. That being said, Cantu has more power than Grud ever will, and is young.

However, Luis Castillo will be available in the offseason (currently a Twinkie), is young, and is a very good hitter. If Omar is thinking more longterm, and they can't do Cantu, then I'd seriously consider Castillo.

And as you said, there's the strong chance the Mets will end up just going for some relief help and a backup power bat on the bench. That's where they really should focus their attention. Of course, this could all be moot and the Mets may need a first baseman if Delgado doesn't start hitting by the All-Star Break.
