Deja Snow: Mets/Rockies Postponed Again

The Rockies and Mets game scheduled tonight has been postponed due to snow and high winds.  No double header will be scheduled for tomorrow, and a makeup date has yet to be announced.

Jon Niese will get the start for the Mets for tomorrow afternoon’s scheduled series finale (3:10 PM EDT).  The forecast looks snow-free as of now.

I had tickets to both games that were postponed this week, so maybe I’m bad luck.  Fortunately, I missed the train wreck of a doubleheader yesterday, though.

Mets Game 13: Loss to Rockies

Rockies 9 Mets 8

Mets seemed to have this one in the bag, leading 8-2 after five. Then, out of thin air (pardon the pun), the Rockies chipped away, tied it, then iced it in extras. Continue reading

Mets Game 12: Loss to Rockies

Rockies 8 Mets 4

There is no truth to the rumor that the Mets received a five-yard penalty for too many men on the field as the result of stationing a snow man in short right field; that was actually Daniel Murphy. Continue reading

Link Roundup: Snow Day Edition

Jeremy Hefner works on his new pitch: The Snowball.

Jeremy Hefner works on his new pitch: The Snowball.

The Mets/Rockies game was snowed out last night.  I mean really, REALLY snowed out.  I live here in the greater Denver area, so I can attest to that.  Seven inches of snow on Tax Day just ain’t right.

They’ll try to play two today, but the weather isn’t looking so great.  Not snowing as of this writing, but more rain and snow is predicted for this evening – which would threaten game 2 of the double header.

And while it’s not snowing, the frozen stuff needs to be delicately removed from the field, or else the players are going to have to exchange their spikes for snow shoes.

UPDATE (10:50 AM MDT): Here’s what Coors Field looks like now as they try to clear the snow – still a lot of work to do.

In uniform news, the Mets and Rockies will all wear number 42 in game 1 to belatedly honor Jackie Robinson Day.  In game 2, they’ll wear their 1993 uniforms to commemorate Colorado’s first game as a franchise – a 3-0 loss to Dwight Gooden and the Mets at Shea.  In an odd anomaly, the Mets will wear their home jerseys from that year, and the Rox will wear their old road unis.

Of course, there was much bigger and more serious news that brought us down to reality once again, the way the real world has a habit of doing on occasion.  Here is some reaction to the terror attack in Boston yesterday, and what baseball means in its context.

Maybe baseball is one of many reminders that for every one maniac who feels the need to take people’s lives away, there are a million good-hearted people who can’t possibly fathom anything of the sort.

A separate-admission double header has been scheduled for tomorrow.  Game 1 will take place at 3:10 PM EDT, and game 2 is scheduled for 8:40 PM EDT.

Dillon Gee will start the first game, according to Terry Collins. He said he may pitch Jeremy Hefner tomorrow night, instead of Aaron Laffey, but he hadn’t decided yet.

Mets – Twins Game Postponed

According to MLB.com, today’s game between the Mets and Twins has been postponed due to inclement weather in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There is light snow and rain in the forecast with temperatures in the 30s, and a wind-chill in the teens.

The game has been rescheduled for August 19th, right after the Mets conclude a left coast swing and just prior to hosting the Braves in Flushing. Interestingly, the Mets had both that Tuesday as well as that Thursday (August 22nd) slated as off-days. So no worries, they’ll still get a day off that week (pending further postponements).

Further, the weather in Colorado this week is looking even worse than it is in Minnesota, with snow expected on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with temperatures dipping into the 20s and single-digit wind-chill factors.

We can craw all we want about poor scheduling, but in the end this could very well be the best thing for the Mets. The old Braves had a phrase that went “Spahn, Sain, and pray for rain”; perhaps the Mets can go with “Harvey and Niese is nice, followed by snow and ice.” Or something …
