Mets 2 Marlins 1
Seems we’re still traveling in a time machine and emerging from it to watch pitcher-dominated baseball from the 1970s — and I’m loving every minute of it.

With this victory, the Mets have reached a significant milestone: 70 wins on the season! It also puts them one game closer to that elusive and magical .500 mark.
Speaking of wins, the Phillies have 90, and the Braves over 80. But so what?
For much of the game, I wasn’t sure whether I was watching two teams that were trying to win, or two teams that were trying to lose.
There’s an old episode of The Simpsons you may have seen where Bart and Milhouse are squaring off against each other on the diamond when Bart says, “Look at me! I’m Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!” and Milhouse retorts with “Well, I’m Esteban Yan of The Tampa Bay Devil Rays!” It’s as funny now as it was when it first aired, given the unlikelihood of kids finding attributes worth emulating in obscure sub-superstars at the pro level. As we lurch toward another post-season we’ll have no part of, you have to wonder how we keep the children interested.
The Mets pull off a doubleheader sweep, as Bobby Parnell saves two games in one day. Did anyone notice amphibians falling from the sky or horses running through the outfield? Hey, we’ve also experienced an earthquake and a hurricane so I’m not taking anything for granted …
R.A. Dickey pitches a fabulous ballgame, the Mets score just enough runs to give him a victory, Jason Isringhausen pitched a clean inning, and Bobby Parnell saves it … either things are improving in Metsville or we have experienced four signs of the apocalypse.
