Jonathon Niese’s Shoulder Injury Explained

What exactly is going on with Jonathon Niese‘s shoulder? Would you like an explanation from an expert?

In the podcast below titled “The Fix,” listen to Angel Borrelli and I discuss Niese’s lingering shoulder issue, what he needs to do to remain healthy, his chance of starting on Opening Day, and what other pitchers can learn from his injury. Run time is just under a half-hour.

This is my first podcast / radio interview in several years, so cut me some slack — and also let me know what we can do better the next time. Yes, there will be a next time — Angel and I intend to do this on a regular basis — so if you have any questions about pitching mechanics that you would like answered during a future episode of “The Fix.” Thanks for listening, and thank you for your feedback.

Joe Janish began MetsToday in 2005 to provide the unique perspective of a high-level player and coach -- he earned NCAA D-1 All-American honors as a catcher and coached several players who went on to play pro ball. As a result his posts often include mechanical evaluations, scout-like analysis, and opinions that go beyond the numbers. Good listen. One suggestion- how about some pictures or diagrams of the muscles, bones, motions etc involved, instead of part of Mr. Mets head?

What do you have against Mr. Met? He did most of the research. Ha!

Thanks very much for the suggestion — I like it. In the hopefully not-so-distant future, we will evolve from a podcast to a video cast, during which we’ll illustrate many of the concepts. In the meantime, though, I like the idea, and will see what we can do to incorporate it in the future — thanks again.

And, thanks very much for listening.

This was a a great listen! Thanks to you both for doing this. I found the part about “dead arm” particularly enlightening — exactly the opposite of the universal perspective within baseball.

      Thanks for listening!

You won’t believe this, but we followed up on that episode with a second one on Niese this morning (Sunday 3/16) — just an hour or so before he left the game with an elbow issue.

I’ll be posting the podcast shortly.
