As I write this, the Rays and Rangers are locked in a game in the bottom of the 9th, and the hated Yanks have gotten the jump on Justin Verlander in the first inning. More pressing concerns are afoot however (Ok, not really) in the form of the Mets’ second base competition. No matter who Terry Collins awards the job, at least we know there is no Luis Castillo to worry about … unless Collins decides to award Luis Hernandez another shot … and he wouldn’t do that, right?! Daniel Murphy Out for the Year

If you missed Sunday’s game, you may not be aware that both Jose Reyes and Dan Murphy left with injuries. Reyes exited with a tight hamstring that has been diagnosed as a “day to day” issue. Murphy, however, is out for the remainder of the season with a grade 2 tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

This is the second time in 14 months that Murphy was seriously injured on a play at second base. If you were in the camp that wanted to see Murphy play the position, are you still of the opinion that he can / should be a second baseman?

You’re Doing Great, Now Get off the Field

How many days in a row will I wake up, check out the blogosphere, scan the standings, and wish this 162 game baseball season would end? Sure, it’s only July, but Bud Selig is not the boss of me. If I followed my own advice and remembered to forget about the legitimate end date to the 2011 schedule, I would be much happier right now. At many points during the past few months lying to myself would have been a viable alternative to—what do they call it? Reality? Considering how many pundits were certain the Mets would find themselves in the NL East basement from the get-go, I’m nearly satisfied with mediocre. If the season ended today we wouldn’t have won anything—no multi-pronged trophies to encase, flags to hoist, or ostentatious rings to flaunt—but I sure as hell wouldn’t feel like I was squandering any more time or emotion, either. And when it comes right down to it, isn’t the MLB all about me, the fan?
