Or I could go, if Reyes is starting, I could go… I might… I could go, Reyes-Bay, uh, 1-2… Yeah I could do that, I could do that.

more latent racism from Mets fans. who do you want to manage? Bobby V? Bobby Melvin? Wally Backman? Bucky Sholwalter? Pick your favorite failed white guy manager. I would love to hear who would be better. Not saying Jerry is great because he isn’t.
Oh come on. Are you kidding me? Jerry is a bad manager and it has nothing to do with race. And yes, I like Valentine and Backman. Not so much Sholwalter or Melvin – would hate to see either manage the Mets.
But you know who I wanted the Mets to hire when they fired Art Howe? Frank Robinson. By far, the best manager I’ve seen in my lifetime and he was managing the EXPOS when I saw him. Hell, I’d STILL take Robinson, even though he’s gotta be pushing 80 by now. The guy was great and if Jack McKeon could manage into his 70s, Robinson could manage in his 80s.
What do you think about that? Idiot…
Try it! Stranger things have worked.
Why not Beltran in the 2-spot? That actually has been tried and it actually did work.
Just because Beltran hit second in 2004 for the Astros in the playoffs does not mean the guy would do as well batting 2nd for the Mets. Having said that how can anyone make a judgment on where Beltran should hit when we don’t even know what kind of player he is going to be? If he is all power and no speed then 4th seems right. If he is a singles hitter with decent legs and some gap power then 2 is okay. I’d rather give him 2-3 weeks to see what kind of hitter he will be the rest of the way before I commit him to one spot in the lineup.
No real disagreement here, Mike. I was just saying that Beltran has hit #2 and seemed comfortable with it back in ’04. Castillo will be back soon anyway. I have no idea why Jerry would even float the idea, but if we’re choosing someone to hit #2 until Castillo gets back, I would try Beltran there.
Bay at #2 isn’t totally crazy. Bay’s OBP this year is .357, which is third among Mets regulars after Wright and Pagan.
Of course I think Pagan would be an even better choice to bat second, but it’s possible Jerry thinks Bay would benefit from having Wright batting behind him for protection. Who knows? It’s not a terrible move, and Jerry as well as anyone we might think of to replace Jerry have all made worse moves than that.
As to Kevin’s charge, Wally probably would be my first choice to manage, but I was perfectly happy with Randolph and think he shouldn’t have been let go. I think Randolph did a much better job than Jerry on the tactical part of managing, particularly bullpen management. Both of them could be better at pushing dogging players to perform (which is where I think Wally would be an improvement).
I think in today’s game charges of racism in baseball just get stupid, because the numbers are all up there and you can’t argue with them.
