Gameday Open Thread: June 1 @ San Diego

The Mets (26-26) are in San Diego again tonight, to take on the Padres (31-20).  Mike Pelfrey (7-1, 2.54) looks to continue his strong start to the season against Wade LeBlanc (2-3, 3.71).

For a primer on the Padres, check out Joe’s interview with Geoff Young of the great Padres blog Ducksnorts. You can also check out Long Live Shea Stadium for some more info on LeBlanc’s recent struggles.

  4. Why in the world would anyone pick up his contract? I know it is one year but still… makes me think if the Mets DFA Perez they might find a suitor.

  5. John Fitzgerald says:

I'm calling it right now at 10:21pm Eastern… Pelfrey no-hitter.

  6. John Fitzgerald says:

Gross… Is that a snot rope on Warthen's lip? Or did he just eat some spicy chili?

  7. John Fitzgerald says:

I really hope Matthew Lillard plays Nick Hundley in The David Eckstein Story.

Of course, Eckstein will be played by a 12-year old MacCauley Culkin for the Angels years and David Spade for the Padres years.

  8. Kevin says:

Running with one out and Pelfrey batting? Nice job Frenchy!!!!

  9. John Fitzgerald says:

Oh well. That dream lasted all of 11 minutes.

  10. metstoday says:

Barajas finally throws out someone attempting to steal — and it's a catcher.

  11. metstoday says:

If Lillard plays Hundley then who plays Chris Denorfia?

  12. John Fitzgerald says:

    That's EASY – Will Janowitz

  14. Kevin says:

who is this kid in the booth with ron/gary – oh it is kevin burkehart? LOL

  15. Kevin says:

What do you think Keith is doing right now? Do you think he actually watches west coast road games?

  16. metstoday says:

Reminds me a bit of Peter Jennings and his pronunciation of "Nee – coo – RAH – gwa"

  17. metstoday says:

Tigers included cash in the deal. Considering that D-Train is a better hitter than Gary Matthews Jr., I'm assuming the Rockies expect to pay at least $2M for Willis' batting skills.

  19. John Fitzgerald says:

Nico Ragwa – isn't he in AAA?

  20. metstoday says:

Careful, Kevin — Mr. Burkhardt is tall. Very tall. Very nice, but very tall.

  21. John Fitzgerald says:

Keith is starting charging a bunt to start a 3-6-3 double play.

    In his sleep.

    Ulysses S. Grant is pitching.

    Joaquin Andujar is batting.

Bernie Carbo is the runner on first base.

    oh boo… i can't embed videos?

here's the live feed from the SNY booth – http://movieclips.com/watch/airplane-1980/kareem-

  24. John Fitzgerald says:

He had a great line about Paul Bunyan.

  25. Well done.

So can the argument that Pelfrey is going to "regress to the mean" be dropped at this point. It doesn't matter how this game ends, Pelfrey is a matured pitcher and we can expect this pitcher to show up every start.

  26. John Fitzgerald says:

I agree 100%. I think last season may be the outlier. Pelfrey is solid.

  27. metstoday says:

I hope so, and believe so. I've said since 2006 that Pelfrey will become a bonafide MLB pitcher when he establishes an offspeed pitch. This year he's using a forkball for offspeed, and whaddya know?

  28. metstoday says:

For the 18th time in three days, someone in the SNY booth mentions the "closed door meeting" between Jerry Manuel and Jeff Francoeur after a Francoeur base hit. AS IF Manuel's "wisdom" were the reason for the hot streak. Shoot me now!
