Mets Acquire Chad Cordero (Yawn)

Did you think the Mets needed help in the bullpen? How does Chad Cordero sound?

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Mets signed right-hander Chad Cordero to a minor league contract.

Rosenthal writes that the deal will be completed today. Cordero opted for free agency after being refusing a minor league assignment with the Mariners last week. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 6.52 ERA in nine appearances with Seattle. The deal reunites him with his former GM Omar Minaya, but Cordero is unlikely to be a difference-maker. (RotoWorld)

I guess this is Omar’s “big” deadline deal! 🙂 Just another Kiko Calero / Kelvim Escobar type signing. Sign ’em cheap and hope they’re healthy and/or productive. You see how Calero and Escobar worked out SOOOO well for Omar this year. Even if he’s healthy, he never was that impressive to start with. And I don’t think he’s any better than Ryota Igarishi either. On the other hand, it doesn’t hurt to have depth at Buffalo just in case. This isn’t a bad deal, but it also isn’t one that will make any impact either (except maybe help Buffalo get to the IL AAA playoffs).
