Mets Release Marcum

The Mets have announced, via their Twitter account, that they have released RHP Shaun Marcum.

This move will save them roughly $1 million tied to a roster bonus in his contract. It will also open a spot on the team’s 40-man roster.

Marcum was 1-10 with a 5.29 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, and was expected to be out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

You wasted your Arial don’t on that?

I wonder what the understanding is between the union and teams about paying for surgery on released players.

it has to fall under workman’s comp. You hurt yourself on the job, the job pays whether it is minimum wage burger flipper or MLB pitcher. I don’t see the Players Union giving away something Burger King has to do.

Oh, that’s right. I guess the surgery is pretty clear cut. Same deal with the rehab?

I’m curious, because this move actually seems a little unusual, like I haven’t seen it much. Maybe teams who are paying for a guy’s rehab anyway figure they’ll keep him around in the hope that he still identifies with the team and will give them first dibs or a discount or something?

Having Marcum as our 6th or 7th man in 2014 might actually be a good idea, if he’d take a minor league deal…

Looks like a sound move to me. We shouldn’t go through too many Kleenexes on behalf of Mr. Marcum, he will be paid his full $4 mil base plus and bonuses he already earned. At a cost of $4 mil, that is probably the most expense win in Mets history. The $1 mil saved comes from roster bonuses not yet earned. Jeffy can put it into the 2014 Carlos Beltran fund.

It’s too bad Marcum didn’t work out for the Mets. I thought this was a decent signing. However, he did not perform well at all. They made this move so they can pay Bobby Bonilla’s contact.

Okay, I am obviously wrong, but I thought you were not allowed to drop a player on the DL.
