Today’s Positive Thought: Mets Starting Pitching

Postgame recap for game three’s loss will come later tonight, after I’m able to view the game via the magic of DVR.

In the meantime, today’s positive thought for Mets fans is this:

The Mets received “quality starts” in two of their first three games of the season, and Dillon Gee was only one out and one run away from making it three-for-three.

What a great break the Mets got wth J Zimmermann getting sick and getting to face Roark. I guess Mets proved they suck offensively against anybody. If the frauderson thinks he has a 90 win team what does he think DC has?
Quality start? Hope you speaking in jest. Pitching to a 4.50 ERA is anything but quality. Its mediocrity. Its a stupider stat than giving a guy save for only giving up 2 runs in the 9th.

I believe Alderson views Washington as a 180-win team this year. It’s supposed to be a private opinion, but I’m sure it’ll be leaked any day now.

    Joe,
We’re three games in, and I don’t know how much more of this positive vibe I can take. Quality starts? Are you kidding me? Do they have a stat for quality ABs too? Do you get one for whiffing on 6 pitches instead of three?

    • Dan42 says:

Nah, that’s a quality whiff, a quality AB would be making it to first base, advancing a runner, or fouling off two or more pitches after getting two strikes, regardless of what happens next. So it would be possible to earn both from the same PA.

    • Joe Janish says:

I’m trying — REALLY HARD — to find positives. Pitchers’ agents love mentioning the quality start in contract negotiations, so figured we’d give it a whirl.

I thought I spied Wright getting a good secondary lead this one time. I marked him down for a Quality Baserunning play.

I have to admire even being able to find something positive out of those three games. It’s like saying, “at least we didn’t walk in a run in each of the first three games”…
