In our latest episode of “Manuel Being Manuel”, Mets manager Jerry Manuel had this response when asked if the most recent loss to the Phillies could be termed “demoralizing” :
“No, it’s not demoralizing. I think when you start to see errors, people not laying down bunts, those types of things, then there’s a reason to be concerned or discouraged.”
And what exactly is it that you’re seeing through those spectacles of yours? Perhaps it’s time for a new prescription.
Honestly, this situation bothers me far less than what transpired under Willie Randolph’s regime — where he’d just go the Marshmallow Fluff route in the media; and completely lose his players behind the scenes.
Manuel’s handcuffed in what he can actually say to the press….and knows this team is capable of sucking a golf ball through a garden-hose.
What is he supposed to say, really?
** Know that I don’t even like him all that much as a manager, but when there’s nothing to work with — there’s nuthin’ to work with.**
This team is awful to watch, and it would figure that I have tickets to not 1, but 2 of the upcoming Dodger games. I figured that by not watching this weekend, it’d wash some of the bad-taste from my mouth.
It did, but only temporarily. Just in time for an Ollie start at home on Wednesday. He has absolutely no choice but to come out strong.
Hell, even if he does..this team will find a way to throw 6 singles on the board — and if we’re lucky, the home crowd might even be treated to a run or 2 (WOOO-HOOO!!!)

Jerry knows that morale is low, and to say that a loss is demoralizing is repetition.
He and a lot of people are just going through the motions until the second half starts and hopefully some players will return.
August 1 will be more telling as far as demoralizing losses because by then things should be closer to normal.
Well, in the game on Sunday there were three really good bunts. But when you have a losing team like the Mets have now, there’s nothing to say. I’ve watched alot of Nationals post-game press conferences where Manny Acta tries to look dissapointed while saying one good thing about team.
When all we have to talk about is what order in the lineup to put Castillo in, or whether Jeremy Reed should play more, we’re really just moving the deck chairs on the Titanic. The ships still going down, it’s just ashame the Captain Jerry will accept no responsibility for it. It’s not all his fault but he’s doing nothing but blaming the injuries.

I’m not sure if anyone’s noticed…..but the Phillies have taken Phlight.
The Mets are going to have to play at an astounding clip to keep treading water — let alone, will be asking the Phils to completely crap-out — just to catch up to them.
Granted, we’ll have a much better picture painted for both teams by the end of the month……but I’m not so sure that the Phils will continue to play crappy baseball at Citizen’s Bank the rest of the year.
Coming out and scoring 22 runs, coming off a 3-game sweep of the Mets is a glaring reminder of who we’ll be chasing.
This current Met team scares no one….and nobody has a clue when any of “The Core” is truly expected back.
Mistakes don’t hurt as much and often don’t get noticed when you are winning. If Jose and the Carlos twins are healthy in a month the Manuel hating will go down significantly. Not all the way though. That’s just not the way things work these days.
When do pitchers and catchers report?
The thing is, the NL East is such this year that if a team gets on a double-digit winning streak, they just might win the division. Now, we all think that the Phillthies can do this at will, and the Mets have a significantly smaller chance of doing something like this–somewhere around “zero.” But, stranger things have happened. Going into September of ’07, whoda thunk that the Rockies would have reeled off the month they did? Going into September of 1973, whoda thunk that the Mets would have won the division?
I’m not saying that they will happen again, just that ehy could. (I don’t think they will, either. I’s love for the B-Mets to prove me wrong.)
