For those wondering if the Mets might sign Stephen Drew to play shortstop, it ain’t happenin’ — the Boston Red Sox have re-signed Drew.
I imagine the recent spirited play and hot bat of Ruben Tejada prompted Drew to realize he had no option in Flushing, and rushed back to the Bosox. Or, maybe the world doesn’t revolve around the Mets, and instead, it had something to do with Will Middlebrooks‘ finger injury (as well as his slow start) — the Drew signing suggests that Xander Bogaerts will slide over the third base.
On the bright side, at least the Mets won’t lose their 3rd-round pick (85th overall) in the June draft — assuming, of course, they don’t run out and sign Kendrys Morales before then.
Glad he signed with the Bosox, he would have just been another overpriced disaster with the Mets. If he hasn’t been working out waiting for someone to over pay him he most likely will end up on the DL before long. He has a history of injury.
What drives me nuts is the Mets sit Lagares for Eric Young under the pretense that they need more offense. Meanwhile they continue to trot Tejada out there. They could have at least showed Flores was incapable defensively or didn’t have the bat to carry his defense at short.
Craig, salary aside, do you think Drew would of improved the shortstop position for the Mets or do you expect Tejada/Flores to outperform Drew? Again, I am asking without taking salary into consideration.

I liked that Alderson said the Mets were “not interested in Drew at that price”. Since Drew is at least 1-2 wins better than Tejada, and since 1-2 wins are a big deal for a team on the fringe of a postseason spot, Alderson has accidentally admitted that the 2014 Mets will not be competing for a postseason spot. (Well, either that, or a shot at the postseason isn’t worth $10 mil to him.) I hope the media does the math before asking Sandy further questions and letting him spin it.
