Jose Reyes Placed on DL; Out 3 Weeks?

According to the Mets PR department, Jose Reyes has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 3rd. Nick Evans has been promoted from AAA Buffalo to take his place on the roster.

Glad to see Evans return to show, though it remains to be seen how much of an opportunity he’ll get this time. There were a few times in the past two weeks that the Mets could have used a righthanded-hitting first baseman, and if that trend continues of seeing LHPs, maybe Evans will get a few starts. He was on a torrid hot streak over the last month and a half, with a 19-game hitting streak from May 12-June 29, batting .514 (38-74) during that span. Overall, Evans hit .329 (74-225) with 28 runs scored, 13 doubles, seven home runs and 29 RBI in 57 games with the Bisons.

As for Reyes, I’m glad the Mets are being cautious and placing him on the DL. However, I’m concerned about one report referencing a doctor who suggests that Reyes rest for three weeks. I wanted him on the DL to keep him rested until right after the All-Star Break, not out for three weeks. Hopefully that source is wrong or there was something lost in the translation.

Tonight’s Mets Lineup vs. Dodgers

Here is the lineup the Mets will send to the plate tonight against Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda:

Angel Pagan – CF
Justin Turner – 2B
Carlos Beltran – RF
Dan Murphy -3B
Jason Bay – LF
Lucas Duda – 1B
Josh Thole – C
Ruben Tejada – SS
Jon Niese – P

I’m feeling a big night from Lucas Duda. Or maybe that’s just my personal hope. I like Niese’s chances, considering that no one on the Dodgers has more than 3 at-bats against him, other than Aaron Miles (1-6) and Juan Uribe (0-6). Let’s hope he has that big curveball working.

Jason Bay Backs Me Up

Exactly one month ago, I proclaimed my optimism for Jason Bay.

At the time, Bay was hovering around the Mendoza Line, and looked completely dumbfounded at the plate.

A month later, Bay has boosted his average 40 points, is hitting an even .400 over the last seven days, and is looking completely in control of his situation while in the batter’s box. I’d go as far to say he’s in the early part of what we’ll later describe as a hot streak.

How did this happen? Who knows? Part of it had to be putting his hands over his ears and no longer listening to every suggestion thrown his way. Perhaps there was some adjustment he made to his stance or his timing mechanism. But a large part of it, I think, was regaining his confidence. Bay now knows he can hit, he’s not worried that something is wrong with his stance or his stride or some other detail.

To me, it appears that Bay is “back” and in the midst of one of his historical, monster hot streaks where he can put a team on his back and carry it. At the very least, he’s a solid cleanup-type hitter again. What do you think? Is Bay back for the duration? Or is this a temporary blip?

Tonight’s Mets Lineup vs. Dodgers

Here is the Mets lineup going against Dodgers lefthanded pitcher Ted Lilly:

Angel Pagan – CF
Justin Turner – 2B
Carlos Beltran – RF
Ronny Paulino – C
Jason Bay – LF
Daniel Murphy – 3B
Ruben Tejada – SS
Lucas Duda – 1B
Mike Pelfrey – P

Angel Pagan is hitting better from the right side lately. Very happy to see Lucas Duda getting a start against a lefthander — he needs that experience. Though, with Jose Reyes unavailable I’m not sure what other option Terry Collins had.

Jose Reyes Hamstring Injury is Minor

According to the MRI results, Jose Reyes has suffered a “grade one” hamstring strain — which is the most minor a hamstring strain can be.

Translation: that is good news. It means that Reyes will not go on the disabled list and should be back in the lineup in a few days. Of course, it also means he needs to be careful, not rush it, and not push it, so that it heals and doesn’t develop into something worse. And the way Reyes plays —
all out and running like a mad man — I hope that the Mets err way on the side of caution. In fact, if I were the Mets I’d just sit him down for the next nine days and through the All-Star break, to ensure he’ll be 100% when the second half of the season begins. Just one thing: Reyes is the starting shortstop for the National League.

What do you think? Should Reyes play on Tuesday if he’s feeling good? Should the Mets sit him down through this West Coast swing? It’s only 7 games. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
