Jonathan Niese Preview

Want to see what Jonathan Niese looks like so you recognize him on your TV set tonight?

These are pictures I took of him pitching for the Mets during spring training in February 2008.

Joe Janish began MetsToday in 2005 to provide the unique perspective of a high-level player and coach -- he earned NCAA D-1 All-American honors as a catcher and coached several players who went on to play pro ball. As a result his posts often include mechanical evaluations, scout-like analysis, and opinions that go beyond the numbers. Follow Joe's baseball tips on Twitter at @onbaseball and at the On Baseball Google Plus page.

What do you think of his mechanics?

I think they are fairly solid. I like his long stride and the way he gets his head out in front, over his front knee, “nose to toes” at the release. If I were to “fix” anything, I’d have him use his 6’4″ frame a little more to his advantage by staying tall a bit longer — he tends to dip that back leg a bit too early. I’d also make sure he pronates his hand after release — it looks to me like he doesn’t always get good pronation, which could eventually lead to elbow issues.
