MetsToday Pulls Bay Offer
On behalf of Omar Minaya and the New York Mets, the MetsToday.com blog has officially pulled the 4-year, $60M contract offer to Jason Bay off the table.
After plenty of time and careful consideration, we Mets fans have determined that Mr. Bay’s inadequacies are too much to bear and that his positive attributes do not warrant $60M and a four-year commitment.
However, we are open to re-negotiating a shorter-term pact in the neighborhood of two years / $20M, including incentives and a team option for a third year.
Additionally, MetsToday has adjusted the offer to Bengie Molina. It is now a series of NBA-style 10-day contracts which are automatically renewable if the player’s OBP is higher than his weight.

Who said Mets fans don’t want Bay? We’ve decided he’s not worth 4 years / $60M. Apparently you didn’t get the memo and missed that meeting. Sorry.
But hey now that you’ve brought up the idea of upping the ante, why not go all out and offer Bay a percentage of ownership? He can’t be any worse than the Wilpons.
Long Time, I don’t have an aversion to that, but I do have an aversion to -18 UZR/150 fielding and the fact that the guy has absolutely no interest in playing for us. Just my personal preferences, I don’t know if you enjoy watching a skinnier Jeff Conine in the outfield.
LTF: you want the Mets to up the ante to Bay when they already have the highest offer on the table. That makes no sense at all. That’s like making a bid on a CD on Ebay, seeing you have the highest bid with 2 hours left to go, and then putting in an even higher bid because you remember how much you just love the third track on the album. Real bright. When Omar gets inevitabley fired, make sure you send in your resume for the GM vacancy. You have my support! Pinhead.
All signs point to Jason Bay having no desire to play for the Mets whatsoever. He is using them as a pawn to either get a richer deal from someone else, or is playing the waiting game until the Mets cave and offer Bay more than he’s worth. I may be inclined to wait until Matt Holliday signs somewhere to adjust the offer to Bay, but Joe’s point is right on target: the only direction the Mets’ proposal to Bay is going at this point is down, and rightly so. His 30/100 (in addition to bad defense, high strikeouts, and inability to shoulder a team’s offensive load) alone would do little in turning the Mets into a playoff contender again. He would be like the Nationals adding Adam Dunn last year.
