Mets Game 15: Loss to Braves

Braves 4 Mets 0

The Mets have now lost 7 straight, including two consecutive doubleheaders.

I’d like to say there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but I can’t see it.

Mets Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey had yet another disappointing outing, allowing 4 earned runs on 11 hits and a walk in 5 innings; he struck out three. His mechanics weren’t too bad, but his confidence and body language were awful.

On the bright side, Pedro Beato continues to look good. Beato spun another two scoreless innings, allowing no baserunners and striking out 3 in a very efficient 20-pitch outing (15 strikes).

Offensively, the Mets were impotent. Two hits and one walk in seven innings against Jair Jurrjens (making his first start of the year) and no baserunners and five strikeouts in the final two innings vs. George Sherrill and Scott Linebrink.

In the top of the sixth with the Mets down by three, Dan Murphy led off the inning with a double and then attempted to steal third. He was thrown out by at least ten feet. There were so many things wrong with the act I don’t know where to start. So much for playing the game “the right way”.

The Braves were 5-for-11 with RISP.

At 4-11, the 2011 Mets are currently one game ahead of the 1962 Mets, who began 3-12 (and finished 40-120). Though, this year’s Mets are doing better than the 3-10 Red Sox, who were picked by everyone to dominate MLB and win the World Series, so there’s that.

Next Mets Game

The final game of the series will be played at 1:35 PM on Sunday afternoon. Dillon Gee comes up from Buffalo to make the start against Tommy Hanson.

They need to bench guys who are not playing the “right” way (e.g., Pagan and Murphy). Send Pelfrey to the minors to learn how to pitch the “right” way (why is he getting behind batters with his splitter?). Trade or DFA some guys (e.g., Hairston).

Nice outing from Beato… I guess that’s something!

Murphy’s baserunning blunders ruin his decent hitting and fielding thus far. Fact is, w/o it, at most, the Mets would have lost 4-2 again. Still, bad vibe.
