Who is Buying Johan Santana Commemorative Crap?

Maybe I’m a jerk for feeling this way, but when I found out the Mets were selling reprints of the game tickets to Johan Santana’s no-hitter, I burst out laughing. The concept is hilarious to me — why would anyone ever pay for something like that? I can almost, sort of, understand buying unused tickets to no-hitters — as the White Sox and Marlins have done in the past. But reprints? Really?

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg, as there are at least a half-dozen other items on the market “commemorating” Johan’s feat. For example, there is a commemorative bat (bat? um … hmm … a game that is lauded for lack of hits is celebrated with a bat?), plaques, balls (which weren’t official game balls, BTW), murals, a “desktop photo mint” (huh?), newspapers, and coins (though, none from the Franklin Mint — yet). I guess you have to admire opportunism — it’s part of the fabric of America after all. Seriously, though? Who is buying this crap?

Are you buying any of this stuff? Do you know anyone who will / would? If so, why?

    I got a t-shirt. I like Johan and I like t-shirts, so it seemed a worthy investment. I don’t really know what I’d actually do with any of the other stuff.

    That said, if they made a bobblehead for the dude who ran on the field during the celebration, I’d be all over that.

      I can understand a t-shirt, since it’s something to wear; it has practicality. But the other stuff — the coins, the bat, reprinted tickets — I don’t get it. Those items would be really cool if they actually came from the ballgame, but otherwise … I don’t know.

    I bought the t shirt at Citi Field last Sunday and I’ve kept the newspapers from last Saturday, that’s all the no hit memorabilia I need

    Maybe they put Bill Maher in charge of ripping people off.If he had an extra 20 mill laying around to give to the Wilponzis he must be good at shaking people down for their last dollar.

    I saved the front page & sports section from last Saturday’s newspaper, and if they put the game on Blu-ray or DVD, I’d buy it. Otherwise, I’m not really interested.
