Mets Get Madden!
During the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday, the Mets selected John Madden during the minor league phase. No not THAT John Madden …. rather, a 6’4″ righthander out of the San Diego Padres’ system. He’s a nice pick, actually, though his numbers are a little skewed as he’s been old for the levels he’s pitched [...]
Phillies Sign Raul Ibanez
According to various reports, the Phillies have signed Raul Ibanez to fill the left field position vacated by Pat Burrell. Sounds good to me. First, it keeps Ibanez off the Mets — let him stumble around CBP rather than Citi Field next season. At 36 years old, his all-around skills are diminishing quickly and he’s [...]
Mets After Alex Cora
According to Rob Bradford of WEEI, the Mets are interested in Alex Cora. Why is this news? Why am I posting it? Further, someone tell me why there are actually some fans “disappointed” that the Mets didn’t sign Nick Punto? Has the world gone mad????? In all seriousness, I like Alex Cora. But not so [...]
Breaking Down “The Deal”
Now that the smoke has cleared, and the details revealed, let’s break down the three-team, 12-player deal that made J.J. Putz a Met. IN: J.J. Putz When healthy, Putz may be a better reliever than K-Rod, believe it or not. The term “filthy stuff” gets thrown around a little too much these days, but if [...]
My Bet: Omar Not Done Dealing
Only hours after a NYC press conference to put a Mets jersey on Francisco Rodriguez, another press conference on the opposite coast announced the acquisition of J.J. Putz. However, it could be only the beginning — Omar Minaya may have a few more moves up his sleeve. Otherwise, why the rush to get this announced? [...]
Mets Trade Heilman, Chavez, Smith
According to several sources, the Mets are part of a three-team deal, acquiring J.J. Putz, Jeremy Reed, and Sean Green in return for Aaron Heilman, Joe Smith, Endy Chavez, and Mike Carp. In the convoluted deal that brings memories of Willie Montanez, Jon Matlack, and John Milner, Heilman, Chavez, and Carp go to Seattle, and [...]
Mets After Juan Pierre?
Ken Rosenthal’s latest column suggests that the Mets are interested in Juan Pierre. Per Rosenthal: Imagine Jose Reyes and Juan Pierre combining for 140 stolen bases at the top of the Mets’ batting order. The Mets may have interest in dealing for Juan Pierre. The idea is a longshot, but the Mets have shown interest [...]
Yankees to Sign C.C. Sabathia
The New York Yankees are on the verge of signing C.C. Sabathia to a 7-year, $160M contract. Word is that the contract includes an opt-out clause after two years. Which to me, is a huge red flag signifying that Sabathia is not so sure he can make it in New York. I could be wrong. [...]
Advice for Omar
Assuming that Francisco Rodriguez passes his physical, he will be signing a contract with the New York Mets either today or tomorrow. That said, I have one piece of advice for Omar Minaya:
K-Rod K-Cups
For me, the greatest invention of the 21st century is the Keurig K-Cup. Similarly, the greatest acquisition by the Mets this winter is K-Rod. In my mind, K-Rod and K-Cups are a marketing match made in heaven. The “Dark Magic Extra Bold” is a fitting flavor, dontcha think? After all, he’s “extra bold”, has “magic” [...]
Mets Sign K-Rod!
Even the Associated Press is reporting it, so it must be true — the Mets have signed Francisco “K-Rod” Rodriguez to a three-year, $37M+ contract. Supposedly, the contract is two years guaranteed, with the third year vested based on appearances. Or something. Who cares? The Mets have their 2009 closer, and can now move on [...]
Dodgers Sign Mark Loretta
MLB.com and the LA Times is reporting that the Dodgers have signed Mark Loretta, and the deal will be official pending a physical. As many of you know, Loretta is a personal favorite of mine, and I’ve championed him as the Mets’ second base solution in each of the past three years. Oh well. Loretta [...]
Michael Young to Mets?
Jon Heyman is reporting that the Rangers are quietly shopping Michael Young, and the Mets are one of the interested teams. Well, it’s not so quiet anymore! Heyman concludes that the Mets would first have to move Luis Castillo (duh). Obviously, if the Mets acquired Young, Castillo’s already untradeable status would turn to impossible-to-trade. A [...]
Francoeur for Greinke?
Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe is reporting that the Braves are discussing a deal with the Royals that would send outfielder Jeff Francoeur to Kansas City for righthander Zack Greinke. From the article: According to one National League executive, the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves have had serious discussions about a trade that [...]
Burnett Has Many Suitors
It appears that three teams are in the midst of a bidding war for A.J. Burnett. The Braves, Red Sox, and Yankees have all reportedly made offers to the fragile but gifted righthander, who is seeking a five-year deal in the neighborhood of $75M+. One must wonder if the Yankees and Red Sox really want [...]
