Game 42: Win Over Nationals

Mets 10, Nationals 7

What a difference a day makes…

The Mets exploded for 10 runs on 15 hits, led by a strikeout-free David Wright, who finished with 4 RBI. Wright’s 3-run double in the first inning put the Mets ahead for good, but it was a bumpy ride.

In the bottom of the first inning, John Maine walked leadoff hitter Nyjer Morgan and was then pulled by manager Jerry Manuel. The official report on Maine’s “injury” was that he wasn’t injured at all. Apparently, Manuel didn’t like something about Maine’s velocity and mechanics. Maine wasn’t happy with the decision, to say the least. It makes you wonder if Dan Warthen or Jerry Manuel saw anything in Maine’s warmup. Or maybe it was just a stunt. Stay tuned.

With Maine out of the game, Raul Valdes came on and pitched brilliantly – 5 IP, 7 H, 1 BB, 3 ER, 6 K – by the time he exited the game, the Mets had an 8-1 lead. Manny Acosta quickly gave up two runs that were charged to Valdes, but the Mets were in control of the game… for the time being.

Meanwhile, the Mets offense was relentless – Jason Bay and Ike Davis each had three hits. Rod Barajas hit his 10th home run.

The Nats put up three in the eighth but Pedro Feliciano was able to get out of a jam by getting Adam Dunn to flyout with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Francisco Rodriguez did his customary “getting thrown off a merry-go-round at 50 mph” routine, looking like he was on the verge of losing his composure while allowing a hit and a run before getting the save.

Next Game

The Mets take on the Yankees on Friday night at Citi Field. Hisanori Takahashi (3-1, 3.12) takes the mound against Javier Vasquez (2-4, 8.01). First pitch at 7:10pm.

Wednesday Morning Link-a-Polooza

Is it really Wednesday? I lost Ethier, Beckett and Sizemore from my fantasy team this week. So I’m kind of shell-shocked. Bear with me… Link time!

OnTheBlack – Kerel Cooper discusses Angel Pagan’s performance so far this season. He’s not a superstar, but he’s the type of guy you want on your team.

BrooklynMetFan – Adam at BMF is “officially snapping.” He wants to know why “ownership is so accepting of losing baseball.”

TheRoPolitans – Andrew Vazzano has a detailed accounting of last night’s game.

MetsBlog – Bob Melvin as the next Mets manager? Jon Heyman says so.

And if you listened to Boomer and Carton this morning, you may have heard the clip below of Wally Backman ripping into his team after its first loss of the season. This is from my TV show, “Playing for Peanuts.” Warning: This is uncensored (unlike the bleeped version you may have seen on SNY). NSFW!!!!

I didn’t actually HEAR Boomer & Carton this morning. So can anyone confirm that this is the clip they played on WFAN?

Game 41: Loss to the Nationals

Nationals 5, Mets 3

Angel Pagan and R.A. Dickey are the kind of players who you could root for, no matter what team they play for. Tonight, they both wore Mets uniforms and they both played (and pitched) their asses off. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to beat the Nationals.

Dickey was solid, allowing two runs in six innings of work. He made a great diving catch on a bunt pop up in the first inning – in the grand scheme of things, it was a small play, but it was clear that Dickey was willing to make the extra effort and earn a spot with the Mets. In the wake of Hanley Ramirez’s recent lollygagging in Florida, Dickey’s effort was nice to see.

Pagan’s night was a bit more historic – he was became the first player in 55 years to take part in an 8-2-6-3 triple play (as a fielder) and hit an inside-the-park home run in the same game. The triple play was the tenth in Mets history.

Dickey was matched by former Met Livan Hernandez, who scattered four hits and allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings.

After Dickey exited the game, the Mets bullpen blew the lead, thanks to losing pitcher Raul Valdes and Fernando Nieve. Valdes and Nieve allowed three earned runs over 2/3 of an inning. It never got ugly or out of control, but while the Mets bullpen was leaking, the Nationals pen was airtight – Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard and Matt Capps allowed one hit and walked none in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Notes: This game was much more exciting than the past two snore-fests, but the Mets offense has mustered only 7 runs this week… David Wright was given the night off tonight, in favor of Fernando Tatis… Tatis hit a solo home run off Matt Capps in the 9th inning – his first hit off right-handed pitching all season… Ollie “All Over” Perez made his first appearance out of the bullpen and was his typically wild self, walking one batter in 1/3 inning of work… The last player to take part in a triple play and hit an inside-the-park home run in the same game was Philadelphia’s Ted Kazanski on September 25, 1955.

Game 40: Loss to Braves

Braves 3, Mets 2

The Mets went into Atlanta needing two quality starts from their two quality starters – Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana…

And they got two quality starts…

But only one win.

Santana went seven innings, allowing two runs and four hits. Meanwhile Kris Medlen was almost as good, allowing two runs and four hits over 6 1/3 innings. The scoring on both sides came entirely from home runs – Troy Glaus hit a 2-run home run in the 3rd inning, but Ike Davis and Jeff Francoeur each hit solo shots in the 5th inning, leaving the score tied at 2-2.

And that’s where it stayed until Jenrry Mejia – who was not sent down to the minors, despite reports to the contrary – came on in the bottom of the 9th inning. Mejia entered the game with a runner on first and nobody out.

Mejia faced Yunel Escobar in an at-bat that must have driven Bobby Cox nuts. Escobar failed to get a sacrifice bunt down, but Mejia eventually walked him. Runners on first and second, no outs.

Up next, Melky Cabrera did his best Yunel Escobar imitation – failing to get down a sacrifice bunt on two attempts, no doubt driving Cox further up the wall he was already climbing.

Cox took the bunt off and Cabrera responded by hitting a chopper to David Wright, whose hurried throw tailed towards the runner and past Ike Davis.

Game over. Ugh.

Random Notes: There isn’t much to add except I wonder if David Wright’s larger glove is playing into his recent fielding woes. The issue of Wright’s glove was brought up during tonight’s edition of Show and Tell with Kevin Burkhardt – I didn’t catch the whole conversation, but the larger glove was apparently Jerry Manuel’s idea.

Wright has always been a tad overrated in the field, but he was always dependable, for the most part. But he dropped a routine throw in Florida on Sunday and today’s throw – while not routine – should have been made. Maybe he had trouble getting the ball out of his glove. Regardless, I’m not sure I understand the theory of forcing a competent major league third baseman to use a larger glove.

Next Mets Game

The Mets travel to Washington to take on the Nationals tomorrow night. Knuckleballer RA Dickey makes his Mets debut against Livan Hernandez. With the amount of 65 mph pitches being thrown, the game should be over by the year 2032. We’ll all have flying cars by then and Jose Reyes will be 85% machine (Robo Reyes), so that should be fun…

Enjoy this flying dog (wait for it):
