MetsBlog is reporting that oddsmakers believe the Mets have a 37.4% chance of making the postseason. That’s up 2% since last week, which is odd since the Mets have gone 4-5 since then, Mike Pelfrey is struggling and Johan’s velocity is still down. Oh, and the bullpen is a disaster.

But the Mets are still only two games behind the Braves for the division lead and a half game ahead of the Dodgers in the wildcard standings. So this is certainly doable – especially if the Mets are serious about trading for Cliff Lee.

When I voted, 20 out of 30 people believed the Mets are a playoff team as they are right now. So, as I see it, 66% of the fan base are setting themselves for disappointment, even after experiencing the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Is it a vice or a virtue to be stubbornly optimistic?

In this case, its almost certainly a vice since these mid-season peaks are keeping Omar and Jerry in thier jobs.

Remember, last year at this time the Mets were a mere 4.5 games out of first, and half the fan base wanted us to be buyers.

If you are Jeff Wilpon its a virtue! If fans keep showing up, Jeff’s dad won’t have to sell and Jeff won’t have to find a real JOB!

I’m still cautiously optimistic. I think this team can possibly win the wild card as is but I don’t think this is a team that can seriously contend for the World Series unless they get a top pitcher.

I’m shocked only 8 other people (out of 108) said flat out “No.” Even with Cliff Lee, this team isn’t guaranteed to make the playoffs. I’m happy we are chasing the Braves versus the Phillies, but I still am ‘cautiously realistic’ vs ‘cautiously optimistic’ like Kerel.

If we get cliff lee i think there is no doubt we have a good chance of making the playoffs… but relying on dickey and takhashi or perez for the rest of the year.. I dont see a ton of confidence in that

Given average luck, I think the Mets are about a mid-80 wins team right now. Somewhere around 85-87 or so. If the Mets offense all comes together at once (Reyes and Wright keep going the way they’re going, Beltran is anything remotely close to his former self, and Bay picks it up a half-notch) they can win a wild card without doing anything and they might even contend for the NL East title.

However, that’s asking a lot. Given average luck (i.e. Jason Bay doesn’t improve at all, Beltran is a bit better than an average CF, Wright cools off a tiny bit, etc…), I think they need to make a trade.

Trading for someone like Ted Lilly gives them a solid shot at the wild card and somewhat of a long shot for the NL East title.

Trading for Cliff Lee makes them front runners for the wild card and reasonable contenders (but certainly not a runaway favorite) for the NL East title.
