Jon Niese to DL, Nickeas Up

According to the Mets PR department, Jonathon Niese has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with an intercostal strain of the right side. To take his place on the roster, the Mets have recalled catcher Mike Nickeas from Buffalo; he will wear uniform #13 and will be available for today’s game at Philadelphia.

Nickeas, 28, joins the Mets for the third time this season. He made the club’s Opening Day roster and appeared in eight games before being optioned to Buffalo on April 29. He was recalled on July 28 and was optioned back to the Bisons on August 5. The 6-0, 213-pound native of Vancouver, British Columbia has hit .217 (5-23) with one double, one home run and three RBI in nine games this year with the Mets. He has appeared in 14 major league games during his career, going 7-33 (.212) with one home run and three RBI.

Niese injured himself in the third inning of last night’s ballgame.

No word yet on who will take Niese’s spot in the rotation. This should make next Monday’s doubleheader against the Marlins interesting.
