Mets Game 106: Win Over Nationals

Mets 8 Nationals 5

The Mets winning streak extends to 5 as the Mets go four games over .500 for the first time all year.

Mets Game Notes

Chien-Ming Wang made his first start since 2009 and it did not go well. He touched 93 MPH but did not have great command, usually getting too much of the plate. A few of his sinkers looked nasty, but most hung up around waist-high, and he didn’t have much else to work with. The velocity was encouraging, but it looks like he’s still a ways from being a MLB starter again.

Dillon Gee, on the other wiggled through another start where he didn’t have great stuff but bulldogged his way through to earn the victory — his 10th of the season. Gee tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. It wasn’t pretty, but it was admirable. Having eight runs of support was helpful, too.

Speaking of, the offensive star for the Mets was Ronny Paulino, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored.

Also, David Wright kept his red-hot hitting going, as he collected two more hits and scored a run.

Strange that Davey Johnson would bat Mets killer Wilson Ramos 8th in the lineup. Ramos had a single, a double, an RBI, and a run scored as he continued his uncanny performance against the orange and blue.

D.J. Carrasco, of all people, cleaned up an 8th inning mess left by Bobby Parnell and Tim Byrdak. It was kind of like watching the game in an alternative universe.

Jason Isringhausen notched his 298th career save.

Up 8-3, I thought DJ might start the inning.

Parnell is still not making me trust him much as a future closer.

His fastball is still too straight and hittable. And he’s using the slider as a change-up, which means it’s flat and hittable as well.

Five in a row, and three A.B. (after Beltran). Gotta love it.

I think once Gee get a big lead, he looks to just throw strikes. Very good idea but he doesn’t have enough to get by only throwing strictly fastballs. But he will learn to continue to mix in a few of his other pitches.
Dizzy Dean would win a lot of 9-7 and 6-3 games. But he also won the 1-0 games. Not comparing Gee to Dean at all. But I think there is a lot of the same thought process there.
Gee may not always look pretty but he does know how to win.
