Mets Starting Pitching Depth

The recent news that Chris Young would go back on the DL — and that his shoulder injury might be serious enough to warrant an extended absence — brought to light a glaring issue in the Mets’ organization: their starting pitching depth. Or more aptly, their lack of it. Continue reading

Mets Game 34: Loss to Dodgers

Dodgers 4 Mets 2

A weekend sweep wasn’t in the cards for the Mets, but at least they finished their homestand with an even 3-3 record. And yes, going .500 is something to be pleased about when you are in last place with a 15-19 overall record. Continue reading

Chris Young Back to DL

The Mets have placed Chris Young on the 15-day disabled list, due to an as-yet unidentified problem with his right shoulder. Pat Misch has been recalled from AAA Buffalo to take Young’s place on the 25-man roster. Additionally, Johan Santana has been placed on the 60-day DL to make room for Misch on the 40-man roster.

Young had trouble “loosening up” prior to Saturday night’s game against the Dodgers. According to ESPN-NY: Continue reading

Today’s Mets Lineup vs. Dodgers

The Mets go for the sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers this afternoon. Here is the lineup they will send to the plate against lefty Clayton Kershaw:

Jose Reyes – SS
Justin Turner – 2B
David Wright – 3B
Jason Bay – LF
Ronny Paulino – C
Ike Davis – 1B
Scott Hairston – RF
Jason Pridie – CF
R.A. Dickey – P

Not surprising to see Justin Turner in there against the lefty, particularly after his big hit last night. Mildly surprising to see Ronny Paulino catching R.A. Dickey, but he historically destroys lefthanded pitchers. You may be surprised to see him hitting ahead of Ike Davis, who is arguably the Mets’ best hitter in this young season. But, Ike has only 4 hits in his last 28 at-bats and is hitting just .179 against lefties this year.

Hey look: Scott Hairston is playing right field. Though Carlos Beltran is scorching the ball, he hasn’t had a rest in quite some time. And remember, Hairston was signed specifically to spell Beltran and to hit against LHPs.

Mets Game 33: Win Over Dodgers

Mets 4 Dodgers 2

Justin time, Mr. Turner made a pinch-hitting appearance to drive in the game winning run.

Justin Turner ripped a pinch-hit, two-run single in the 8th — perhaps the longest single in Citi Field history — to score Jasons Bay and Pridie to give the Mets a victory over the Dodgers. Continue reading

Who Will Pitch and Catch On Sunday?

Going by the regular order of the Mets’ 5-man starting rotation, it will be knuckleballer R.A. Dickey’s turn to take the mound for Sunday’s ballgame against the Dodgers. Generally speaking, Josh Thole has been R.A.’s unofficial personal catcher — so the battery would tentatively be Dickey and Thole. However, there is some discussion that could change before tomorrow. No surprises. With the way Pridie and Young have been hitting, this lineup looks pretty deep.

Angel Pagan, Bobby Parnell Injury Updates

In case you haven’t heard, Angel Pagan had something of a setback in his bid to return from an oblique injury; he felt discomfort while playing in a rehab game in Port St. Lucie and has been shut down indefinitely. As long as Jason Pridie is hitting and fielding as well as he has lately, Pagan’s extended absence shouldn’t be too much of a concern.

In other injury-related news, Bobby Parnell will be pitching in an extended spring training game down in PSL and could be back as early as next week.
