Mets Game 125: Win Over Marlins

Mets 6 Marlins 5

They’re not dead yet!

The Mets came from behind in dramatic fashion, as the beleaguered Luis Castillo stroked a game-winning blooper in the bottom of the ninth to drive home Ike Davis with the winning run.

The situation was set up the inning before, when Angel Pagan stretched a single into a double and raced home on a base hit by Carlos Beltran to tie the ballgame.

Both the Braves and the Phillies lost, so the Mets picked up a game on both in the standings!

Game Notes

I heard the Mets won — listened on the radio — but didn’t see it, so don’t have much from an analysis perspective. This game must have been fun to watch (it was thrilling to listen to), yet how many actually did? Too bad it didn’t happen in May, when people were still paying attention. With the Mets more or less out of the race, the team usually playing more lackluster than they did in this contest, and the NFL season coming soon, people are finding better things to do than pay attention to the futiles of Flushing.

If you didn’t listen on the radio, you missed a gem at the very end by Howie Rose, after Castillo’s game-winner, as his teammates rushed from the dugout to congratulate him:

“No one’s ever loved a pounding as much as the one Castillo is getting right now ….”

That right there almost made it worth listening.

Angel Pagan went 4-for-5 with 2 doubles, his 31st stolen base, and 3 runs scored. Beltran went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 walks. Perhaps he is getting hot and will put the Mets on his back and carry him to a playoff spot?

Jeff Francoeur drove in 2 runs with two sac flies.

Gaby Sanchez hit a homer and a double and drove in four of the five Fish runs.

In unrelated news, lifelong Dodger fan Rod Barajas fulfilled his childhood dream of wearing an LA uniform and went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer. He did that once for the Mets a few months ago, I believe.

Next Mets Game

Mets and Fish play again in Flushing on Wednesday night at 7:10 PM. Pat Misch goes against Alex Sanabia, whoever that is.

Tuesday Morning Mets Links

ESPN New York – Adam Rubin has a fantastic summary of the circus that has been the 2010 Mets season. Let’s go Mess!

MetsBlog – A boycott of the Mets on August 25… Sounds like a plan!

Mets Gazette – To the Wilpons, “accountability” is a dirty word. And “nepotism” is a management strategy!

And here are Kerel Cooper’s thoughts on Santana, Barajas and the Next Mets Manager:

The Argument for Ken Oberkfell

Amidst all the buzz about who should be the next Mets manager, there is a name that is somewhat under the radar, but gets tossed into the conversation here and there depending on who is talking: Ken Oberkfell.

People like to bring up “Obie” because he has “put in his dues” managing in the Mets farm system for the past several years. And he has managed many current (and possibly future) Mets when they were playing at the lower levels. Is that enough justification to make him manager of the big club? Let’s take a deeper look at this candidate. Continue reading

Mets Game 122: Win Over Pirates

Mets 7 Pirates 2

Too bad it took 122 games for the Mets to find a team that their lineup could put a whuppin’ on.

The Mets scored, scored, and scored some more, to the point where one might’ve began to feel sorry for Jeff Karstens and the AAA team behind him.

But it was nice to see the orange and blue finally burst out with the lumber, and perform the very opposite of “pathetic”.

Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey cruised through 8 innings to his 12th win of the season, allowing only 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5. He had the hard sinker running and kept his wits about him for most of the game.

The Mets rapped 15 hits, 3 for extra bases, including Chris Carter‘s third homer of the season; they were 6-for-11 with RISP. The only Met position player not to hit safely was Ruben Tejada.

Jose Reyes went 3-for-5 with a double, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base. David Wright also went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored hitting from the five-hole behind the Animal Chris Carter.

Next Mets Game

The Mets and Bucs do it again on Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Jonathon Niese goes against James McDonald.

John Delcos: Questions for 2011

NOTE: Following is an article by John Delcos, which was posted a few days ago on his own site “New York Mets Report“. The former Journal News Mets beat writer is also an occasional contributor here, and has chosen this particular piece to share with MetsToday readers. Please feel free to comment, and direct your questions to John.

Let’s face it, we’re down to miracles and hoping for historic comebacks now. The Mets lost with their ace the other night and find themselves 11 games behind Atlanta.

How many days before spring training?

As far as I’m concerned the next six weeks should be about laying the ground work for 2011, a time to find some answers. Here are the most important issues: Continue reading

Friday Mets Links: Wally B or Bobby V?

MLB.com – Marty Noble thinks Wally Backman should be the Mets next manager.

SI.com – Jeff Pearlman thinks the Mets are baseball’s worst franchise and Bobby Valentine should be the next manager.

No more links for today. This is the most important discussion in the Mets-o-sphere for the next 3 months. Both Noble and Pearlman make excellent points and the Mets would be better off with either manager. What do YOU think?
