Billy Wagner Signs with Braves

According to multiple sources (originally Ken Rosenthal), former Mets closer Billy Wagner has signed a one-year, $7M contract with the Atlanta Braves.

Yee ha. Can’t wait to see Wags 18 times a year.

Hat tip to MetsToday reader “Walnutz15”, who is quite perturbed. Says Walnutz:

So, as we figured from the start — the Mets made their typical salary dump trade at the deadline…..acquiring Chris Carter; who could be a clone of a handful of players they currently have (some promise with the stick; no defensive position).

Meanwhile, the Red Sox take a “risk”; offer him the arbitration after the season — knowing he’d have no chance to close in Boston — and now receive the Braves’ 1st round pick and a sandwich pick in the next season’s draft.

Chris Carter and Eddie Lora + $3 or so million to waste away on Alex Cora?

Just defines this mess of a franchise……….they’d rather overpay old, banged-up scrap-heap friends of the program – than invest in the MLB Draft.

Have to say I’m with Walnutz on this one. Though Carter arrived as the most polished hitter in the Mets’ farm system, there are doubts he has enough ability to rise above his status as a “AAAA” hitter. Lora is highly projectable. Do Carter and Lora equal two first round picks? More to the point, is the Mets’ system more desperate for players like Carter and Lora or two picks? That one is arguable, depending upon your perspective. I’m in the camp that believes the Mets need to build more for 2015 than 2010, so I’d lean toward the picks. But, you never know — Chris Carter could turn out to be the next Travis Hafner, and/or Lora may develop into something better than the Mets can draft in June 2010.

But, I’m also reacting with more emotion than logic. It is annoying that Wagner stayed in the NL East, and we’ll constantly be reminded of the trade if Carter doesn’t pan out. I might feel differently if Wags went to the AL — after all, the Mets may not have been smart enough to make the most of those draft picks anyway.

Why the Mets Payroll Doesn’t Matter

The Mets have the highest payroll in the NL, and the second-highest payroll in MLB. Yet they finished in second-to-last place in the NL East. A few bloggers have an idea on how and why the Mets’ money doesn’t matter.

Joe D at MetsMerizedOnline succinctly explains why the Mets’ payroll is so bloated, and how they can learn about value from the Nats, Marlins, and Phillies.

BlueAndOrange.net advances the conversation, bemoaning the signing of Alex Cora and also showing us Where Omar Minaya Hides the Wins.

Sam Page at AmazinAvenue exposes The Real Problem with the Alex Cora Deal — focusing on the inane vesting option built into the contract. A must-read to fully understand the consequences of the signing.

On the flip side, Kerel Cooper likes the signings of Cora and Chris Coste.

Kelly Shoppach Traded to Rays

kellyshopIn the past week, Ed at MetsFever, DJ Short, and Ted Berg all discussed Indians catcher Kelly Shoppach, who would become available if he were non-tendered.

Before I could weigh in on the subject, however, the Indians traded Shoppach to the Tampa Bay Rays.

As a free agent, I liked the idea of 29-year-old Kelly Shoppach — much more than I like the thought of Bengie Molina. But that ship has now sailed, so forget it.

However, whenever one door closes, another opens, right? And with the acquisition of Shoppach, the Rays have to do something with incumbent catcher Dioner Navarro. A-ha !

Navarro hits from both sides of the plate, has a strong arm, and was an All-Star in 2008. Oh, did I mention he’s only 25 years old?

The downside to Navarro is he had an awful year at the plate in 2009, hitting only .218. However, his impressive 2008 season suggests that he has offensive skills — maybe all he needs is a change in scenery to see them return. Again, he’s only 25, so there’s plenty of time to make a comeback. After his awful ’09, there’s a good chance that the Rays non-tender Navarro. If so, he’ll become a free agent, in which case, I’d hope the Mets would at least make an inquiry. After all, switch-hitting All-Star catchers in their mid-20s don’t grow on trees.

No Arb for Olivo, Polanco, Dye, Dotel

Today is the last day for teams to offer arbitration to players who have filed for free agency.

If you are unaware, this is a big deal particularly in regard to free agents who are classified as “Type A” or “Type B”. When a team offers arbitration to those free agents, and the player signs elsewhere, the team receives compensation draft picks — one of which comes from the new team that signed the free agent. So for example, if the Mets sign a “Type A” free agent who had been offered arbitration by his former team, they would lose their 2nd-round pick in the June 2010 draft. Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors offers a more detailed explanation.

So when a “Type A” or “Type B” free agent is NOT offered arbitration, the eventual signing team doesn’t lose any draft picks.

Today, it’s been announced that, among others, Type A free agents Placido Polanco, Jermaine Dye, and Octavio Dotel, and Type B free agent Miguel Olivo have NOT been offered arbitration by their 2009 clubs. I highlighted these four because they all fit holes that need to be filled by the Mets. Continue reading

Mets Hire Wayne Krivsky

wayne-krivskyAs expected, the Mets have brought in “motivation” for Omar Minaya — former Reds GM Wayne Krivsky.

Krivsky was hired by the Mets last June as a scout, but after the season he moved on to the Orioles as GM Andy MacPhail’s special assistant — a role he likely would have filled for the Mets had Tony Bernazard not been in the way.

In any case, Krivsky returns to Flushing, bringing with him real-world MLB front office experience and success (with the Twins) — a strange combination for a Mets hire, no? Unlike his predecessor, Krivsky comes to the Mets with experience negotiating player contracts from the TEAM’s perspective (Bernazard spent his post-playing career as an MLBPA assistant / consultant to players prior to joining the Mets). That said, perhaps the Mets will finally start signing players to logical contracts — rather than grossly overpaying with dollars, terms, years, and other conditions (I’m going to hope / assume that Krivsky didn’t start working for the Mets until AFTER Alex Cora was signed).

When it’s all said and done, this could turn out to be the Mets’ top free-agent acquisition of the winter.

Phillies Sign Brian Schneider; Coste Prefers Philly Too

brian-schneider-sideAccording to The Morning Call, Brian Schneider has signed a one-year two-year, $3M contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Schneider grew up in Pennsylvania, graduating from Northampton High School, about an hour north of Philadelphia — and as you may have guessed, grew up a Phillies fan.

According to Brian’s Uncle Mike (the Northampton HS Athletic Director):

“It’s neat because we all grew up Philllies fans and we were fans wherever he went, but for him to come back home, everybody is overjoyed. His dad (Mike’s brother Pete Schneider) called and said he on his way over to the stadium now.”

In related news, the Mets signed former Phillie Chris Coste to a contract that guarantees him a spot on the 40-man roster. Coste had this to say to CSNPhilly.com (hat tip to MetsBlog):

“It was the Mets,” Coste told CSN. “It’s the last team I ever saw myself playing for. I knew I was going to accept it, but had to think about it for a few days. It wasn’t my choice to leave Philly,” Coste said. “I never wanted to leave Philadelphia, I will always consider myself a Phillie.”

It is so pleasing to hear that Brian Schneider is happy to be joining the Phillies, and that the Mets’ newest catcher would prefer to be with the Phillies.

Coupled with the recent signings of Alex Cora and Elmer Dessens, could the offseason have begun with any more optimism and excitement? Doubtful.

Reconstruction Nearly Complete

The building of the 2010 World Championship Mets has begun with the signings of Alex Cora and Chris Coste.

Not only that, but the Mets are on the verge of re-signing reliever Elmer Dessens and inking Henry Blanco to a contract.

What’s that rapid clicking noise? Ah yes — the rush of 2009 season-ticket holders zipping to Mets.com to re-up their plan for 2010. With pieces like this in place, a postseason appearance is pretty much guaranteed.

The only thing that could complete this outstanding makeover would be the hiring of Continue reading
