Tonight’s Mets Lineup vs Giants

If the weather doesn’t interfere, this will be the lineup the Mets send out to face Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants:

Jose Reyes SS
Dan Murphy 2B
David Wright 3B
Carlos Beltran RF
Ike Davis 1B
Ronny Paulino C
Willie Harris LF
Jason Pridie CF
Chris Capuano P

Jason Bay is still out on paternity leave. That’s a sentence I never thought I’d ever type when I started this blog in 2005. Mildly surprising to see Paulino in there after Josh Thole’s three-hit day.

Mejia: Bad Luck or Just Bad?

After hearing the news of Jenrry Mejia’s elbow injury, many fans lamented about the “bad luck” of the Mets, and how they “can’t catch a break”. Is it really “luck”? Or are injuries such as this more indicative of something “bad” about the Mets? Or perhaps baseball in general? Continue reading

Jenrry Mejia Out with Elbow Injury

According to the Mets PR department, top prospect Jenrry Mejia has been diagnosed with an elbow injury and will be shut down.

From the official release:

Righthanded pitcher Jenrry Mejia was examined today by Mets Medical Director Dr. David Altchek and was found to have a complete MCL tear of the right elbow. Mejia underwent an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. Surgical treatment has been recommended, but Mejia is expected to seek a second opinion.

This is not good news, obviously. What adds to the sadness about this is it might have been avoided. It’s fairly common for an elbow injury to either precede or follow a shoulder injury, and since the Mets never made a significant change to his dangerous mechanics, this doesn’t come as a surprise.

Luckily, elbow surgery has a fairly good success rate in comparison to shoulder surgery. What are the chances that upon his return, someone qualified takes a good look at Mejia’s mechanics and makes changes to avert this happening again?

BTW, I’m not sure why the injured body part is being called “MCL”; technically speaking, “MCL” refers to something in the knee. The elbow has three ligaments: ulnar collateral, radial collateral, and anular. For whatever reason, Dr. Altcheck refers to the UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) as “MCL”. Whatever you call it, if it’s torn, then Jenrry needs “Tommy John Surgery”. But hey, I’m not a doctor — I don’t even play one on TV, so what do I know?

Mets Game 28: Win Over Phillies

Mets 2 Phillies 1

United States Special Forces, executing a CIA operation, shot Osama Bin Laden and took possession of his dead body. Though this doesn’t signify the end of terrorism nor the defeat of Al-Qaeda, it is a welcome turn of events and a symbol of victory for many of us.

In other news, the Mets and Phillies engaged in comparatively meaningless ballgame. Continue reading

Tonight’s Mets Lineup vs. Phillies

Here is tonight’s lineup against Phillies lefthander Cliff Lee:

Jose Reyes – SS
Justin Turner – 2B
David Wright – 3B
Carlos Beltran – RF
Jason Bay – LF
Ike Davis – 1B
Ronny Paulino – C
Scott Hairston – CF
Chris Young – P

Hey, who’s that guy in the #7 spot? Name is vaguely familiar … wasn’t he on the Pirates a few years ago? I have a good feeling about Justin Turner tonight, I’m not sure why.

The game will be televised on ESPN, which explains the 8 PM start time. It’s a school night so I guess the kiddies won’t be able to see past the fourth inning.

Happy Birthday Roy Lee Jackson

Happy birthday today to Roy Lee Jackson.

One of my earliest memories of visiting Shea Stadium was in 1980, with Roy Lee Jackson starting the game for the Mets. I think it might have been an Old Timer’s Day, but can’t remember for sure. In any case, I remember Roy Lee striking out 7 or 8 batters in the first four innings, then leaving not long after, and the Mets lost. That was the way things went back then.

Other birthdays today: Ray Searage, Charlie O’Brien, Armando Reynoso, and Joe Hietpas.

Mets Game 27: Loss to Phillies

Phillies 2 Mets 1

Holding the opposing team to two runs usually means you have a great chance to win — particularly when playing at a hitter-friendly park such as Citzens Bank. Unless, of course, you are facing Roy Halladay. Continue reading
