Mets Game 84: Win Over Reds

Mets 3 Reds 0

Perhaps tired of leaving things in others’ hands, Johan Santana said, “I’ll do it myself”.

Santana pitched all nine innings, shutting out the Reds on 3 hits. Not only did he refuse help from the bullpen, but he also supplied all the runs he needed via a solo homer — the first of his MLB career.

The offense did give him a couple insurance runs, but he did not need them. He is a man!

Game Notes

It was all about Johan Santana, who was masterful and pitched like a true ace for the first time in a long time.

Santana’s homerun came after seeing a dozen pitches in a hard-fought at-bat vs. emergency starter Matt Maloney, who had filled in for the ailing Aaron Harang. Harang is dealing with a chronic back issue.

Jose Reyes returned to the lineup and went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Jason Bay drove in the other two Mets runs with a two-out single in the sixth.

Next Mets Game

The rubber match begins at 7:10 PM on Wednesday night. Jon Niese goes to the mound against Bronson Arroyo.

John Delcos on Pelfrey’s Meltdown

The replays didn’t show whether, or where, Mike Pelfrey’s errant fastball clipped Scott Rolen, but how the Mets’ pitcher responded to not getting that call, and not getting a later call on a strike to Drew Stubbs was the backdrop of Cincinnati’s six-run fifth inning and subsequently last night’s loss to the Reds.

Pelfrey didn’t lose last night because he didn’t get a couple of calls. He lost because of his reaction to not getting those calls.

Whereas Pelfrey had been composed most of this season, he became flustered and unnerved. Whereas he had minimized damage he dug himself into a hole the Mets could not dig out of. His body language spoke of frustration and anger.

Pelfrey couldn’t stop the bleeding. He didn’t do his job, which, is when things go awry to remember he still needs to get outs.

“I thought, for the first time in over a year, I let my emotions get the best of me,’’ Pelfrey said. “And, that wasn’t very good on my part.’’

Pelfrey’s last few starts did not have the crispness he’s had all season. He gave up seven runs last night and 11 in his past two starts, neither of which he made it out of the fifth. He’s given up runs in the first inning of his last six games. All of a sudden, he’s been susceptible to the home run.

While the All-Star talk has died down, it’s too early to say if he’s regressed of simply hit a rough patch. Maybe he’s going threw a dead arm period. I don’t know. But, what I do know is Pelfrey has pitched too good for too long in the first half for panic.

That he acknowledged his downfall and accepted responsibility is a great sign, another step in his ascension to becoming an All-Star caliber pitcher.

Perhaps more than any other start he’s made in the first half, Saturday’s game against Atlanta could be his most interesting if not revealing.

Is Omar Faking a Lee-gasm?

The Mets have been very vocal in their interest in acquiring Cliff Lee. They’ve made the usual statements about being unwilling to trade “top prospects” to acquire him, but if you believe the Mets, the interest is there.

However, recent reports indicate that:

  1. The Mets may be out of cash
  2. The Mets are interested in cheaper options, like Ted Lilly.
  3. Other teams are more willing to trade top prospects just to rent Lee for the pennant race – specifically, the Twins and the Rays.

Now, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports is reporting that the Mets don’t seem very serious about Lee at all. RotoWorld thinks the Mets may be stringing their fans along for the month of July – hoping to keep their hopes up until Cliff Lee lands with another team.

And here are Kerel Cooper’s thoughts on the state of the Mets:

Mets Game 83: Loss to Reds

Reds 8 Mets 6

Well, at least they fought back.

The Mets fell behind 8-1 after a six-run top of the fifth but before the Reds could relax, the home team responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Unfortunately, the Mets didn’t score again while the Reds added an insurance run, hence the final score. Hey, the guy is 10-3 … games like this are going to happen once in a while.

Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey had a bad night, allowing 7 earned runs on 9 hits and 4 walks in 4 2/3 innings.

David Wright was 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk, and 2 runs scored. Angel Pagan also had two hits and went yard.

Fernando Nieve crawled out from under his rock and pitched three innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out 3. I still like his running, sinking fastball but he seems to have lost his “edge” — and that has nothing to do with Derek Jeter.

Not much more to say, other than that Joey Votto is the best Canadian in MLB right now (sorry, Jason Bay). He may also be the best North American-born hitter as well.

Next Mets Game

The Mets and Reds do it again at 7:10 PM on Tuesday night in Flushing. Johan Santana faces Aaron Harang.
