Blog Roundup: The All-Report-Card Edition

The second half of the 2012 season is about to begin for the Mets, and that can only mean one thing.

Report cards.  A LOT of report cards.  Now is the time of year that publications and blogs post their first half grades.  They evaluate pitchers, hitters, coaches, and maybe even Cowbell Man.  In fact, there are so many Mets first-half report cards, that one could dedicate an entire blog roundup to them, if one wanted to.

So, without further ado, the Blogs report:

  • Daily Stache has grades and comments from its writing staff.
  • Bleacher Report presents its report card in slideshow form.
  • The Record chimes in with its evaluation.
  • SI Live represents the Staten Island grading community.
  • Adam Rubin brings us the Mothership’s grades. (the Mothership has excellent taste in Mets blogs, incidentally)
  • Metcellaneous has a report card that is anything but incomplete.
  • Mets 360 gives the Mets an all-around good grade.

And I give all the Mets blogs an A+.  Let’s hope the second semester of Mets baseball is as fun to write about as the first.

Link: Dillon Gee to Have Surgery

Adam Rubin of ESPN reports that Dillon Gee will have surgery to repair a damaged artery in his right shoulder.  The procedure should prevent any future episodes of clotting.  Earlier this week, doctors discovered a clot in his shoulder that caused numbness in his pitching hand.

After doctors dissolved a clot but determined Gee’s artery was damaged, he was presented with the option of using blood thinners for the near future, but that was riskier. So Gee has opted to have a procedure performed by leading specialist Dr. Robert Thompson at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, the source said.

Gee is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, and may not pitch again this year.

Poll: Mets First-half MVP

Who is the Mets’ first-half Most Valuable Player — the man who has contributed the most to their success thus far? Hard for me to say; on the one hand, David Wright has been carrying the offense on his back. On the other hand, the starting pitching has been excellent, so maybe one of the starters deserves the honor. For example, it could be said that the Mets wouldn’t even have BELIEVED they could have a winning record at the All-Star break if it weren’t for Johan Santana‘s presence — some think Santana lifted the hopes of the entire organization, and perhaps ignited extra motivation from his teammates. At the same time, R.A. Dickey has been simply outstanding; some argue, he’s been the best pitcher in MLB. And then there’s Dillon Gee, who hasn’t been nearly as outstanding as Dickey or Santana, but who has given the Mets at least five innings and a chance to win every single start; that’s a valuable asset at the back-end of a rotation.

Maybe Gee is a stretch, but I’m not sure the Mets have a winning record if, say, Chris Schwinden is taking the ball every five days instead of Gee.

Bottom line is I’m not sure who is the Mets’ first-half MVP, so I’ll leave it to you — vote for your choice, and explain your supporting argument for that player in the comments.

Should the Mets Deal Before the Deadline?

No doubt you’ve seen the rumors of the Mets’ interest in people such as Ramon Hernandez, Huston Street, Grant Balfour, etc. Acquiring a few pieces before the July 31 trade deadline would certainly be exciting, but would it really be helpful toward the Mets’ pursuit of a postseason appearance? And could deals hurt more than they help? Continue reading
