Johan Santana’s All-Star Bowling Classic

The Johan Santana Foundation will host the first Johan Santana All-Star Bowling Classic on June 21, 2010 at Lucky Strike in Manhattan. Proceeds will go to the foundation to help raise awareness and research of skin cancer.

Here’s the backstory, from the official press release:

In June 2007, Johan held the first Johan Santana Celebrity Bowl-A-Thon in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a tribute to Lynne Greenberg, the wife of one of his agents, Ed Greenberg, who had passed away from melanoma at age 42. Lynne Greenberg was considered a part of Santana’s extended family and together with her husband had attended family events and celebrated Santana’s successes as a close friend.

“I want people to know how to protect themselves and their families,” stresses Santana. “Make sure to put on sunscreen before you go out and reapply it after you swim, after you sweat, or even if you’re just hanging out. More than 90 percent of skin cancer is caused by too much sun.”

In addition to his foundation, in 2007, Santana became a spokesman for the Play Sun Smart™ program, a public service partnership that teams the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) with Major League Baseball (MLB), and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) to educate players, teams, staff, and fans about the importance of skin cancer prevention and detection.

Since the program’s inception in 1999, more than 21,572 players, trainers, coaches, and staff members have been screened for skin cancer, and more than 600 suspicious lesions have been detected including 70 suspected melanomas.

Mid-Week Morning Mets Links

The Mets Police – Orel Hershiser claims Doc Gooden was tipping his pitches in the 1988 NLCS. And the Dodgers couldn’t do much about it, apparently.

Mack’s Mets – Mack gives the Mets an “F” for their fourth round draft pick – San Diego State OF Cory (son of Greg) Vaughn.

Mankato Free Press – A short profile on Mets 12th-round pick – Minnesota State RHP Bret Mitchell. Mitchell set the school’s strikeout record this season (108 in 94 innings), while compiling a 10-4 record with a 4.31 ERA. According to MSU coach Matt Magers, Mitchell’s curve is his strikeout pitch and he will have to develop a changeup and slider.

Baseball Digest – Robert M. Pimpsner points out that the Mets were focused on drafting college players this year. Out of their first 30 selections, the Mets drafted 27 college players, including 17 college pitchers.

Mets Game 58: Win Over Padres

Mets 2 Padres 1

Nine is fine.

For the second time this season, the Mets won their ninth game in a row at home. Clearly, they are more comfortable playing at The Field at Shea Bridge than anywhere else.

Game Notes

Mike Pelfrey stepped up and pitched nine full innings — that’s a complete game if there aren’t extra innings — and allowed one measly run on five hits and no walks, striking out six. Granted, it’s the Padres — one of the weakest offensive teams in baseball. But it’s still an MLB club, and Big Pelf was magnificent. He is finally becoming the ace-like stud we envisioned ever since he was drafted in the first round of 2005.

As if from a storybook written for Mets fans who love homegrown talent, Pelfrey’s outstanding moundwork was suppored by the firepower of fellow farmhands Ike Davis and Jose Reyes — each of whom hit a solo homer to provide all the Mets’ runs in the contest. Reyes’ shot tied the game one-all in the seventh, and Ike’s blast in the eleventh frame was his first career walkoff homer.

By facing — and striking out — one batter in the top of the 11th, Elmer Dessens earned his first MLB win since August 26, 2007.

Seems like every day we mention Angel Pagan. He had another two hits in this game and another stolen base (his 11th).

David Wright also had two hits, including a double. Did you know that Wright is 15-for-29 (.517) over his last eight games? That’s not just hot, that’s Francoeur-hot.

Speaking of, Jeff Francoeur had only one hit, but it extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Mets (0-8) and Padres (0-9) combined to go 0-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

Next Mets Game

The Mets and Padres do it again at 7:10 PM on Wednesday night. Johan Santana faces Mat Latos.

Tuesday Afternoon Mets Links (Blake Forsythe Edition)

ESPN New York – As previously posted, Brooklyn Cyclones manager Wally Backman is a popular guy with his former players.

Mets Minor League Blog – Toby Hyde has a running thread to cover day two of the amateur draft. With the #89 pick, the Mets have selected University of Tennessee catcher Blake Forsythe.

ESPN – Karl Ravech thinks the NL East is MLB’s future “power division,” based on money and the media. By that rationale, the Mets should be on their way to facing the Yankees in this fall’s World Series for the 19th time in 20 years. Let’s go Mets! [via MetsBlog]

Daily News – It sounds like MLB is still taking this “Ollie Perez is injured” gag a little too seriously. Lighten up, guys!

CBS Sports – A preview of the Mets-Padres series that starts tonight. Check back here at MetsToday at about 5pm for the Gameday Open Thread.

Quote of the Day: Dan Uggla on Wally Backman

Next week, Wally Backman will begin managing the Brooklyn Cyclones. Backman has been managing in independent and affiliated minor league baseball since the mid-1990s.

ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin has interviewed several of Backman’s former players to give a sense of what kind of manager he is. Here is Dan Uggla’s take:

“Well, obviously he’s very passionate with protecting his players,” Uggla said. “I’ll tell you what, if you play for Wally Backman, you’re going to be able to run through a brick wall, because we have the same emotions toward him as he has toward us. I mean, I would have run through a brick wall for him. Everybody is playing hard — I think playing above their ability — when they play for a guy like that. [ESPN New York]

I have to say, Rubin’s article is the most accurate reporting I’ve ever seen regarding the passion that Backman’s players have for their manager.

Read the whole thing here.

And if you want to get an idea WHY players would want to run through a brick wall for Wally Backman, check out this NSFW video of Backman defending one of his players (WARNING: Adult Language!):

Draft Day Open Thread

Matt Harvey (photo via Prospect Nation)

The Mets selected RHP Matt Harvey out of North Carolina with the #7 pick in tonight’s MLB Amateur Draft.

Matt Cerrone at MetsBlog is reporting that Mets officials had the following praise for Harvey in a conference call to discuss the pick:

  • He’s big, strong and durable, similar to Mike Pelfrey.
  • He has a power arm, capable of throwing his fastball between 91 and 98 mph.
  • His curve ball sits in 80s, his change-up in the low 80s, and and his slider in the mid-80s.
  • He pitches off his fastball, but all of his pitches are usable.
  • He has good command and control for his age.
  • He was already very good in high school, but benefited from college coaching.
  • He’s going to be a strike thrower, using both sides of the plate.

Matt also points out that Harvey is represented by Scott Boras…

Feel free to discuss and if you find anything interesting on the team’s upcoming picks, post it in the comments. I’ll be back and forth throughout the night and I’m sure Joe is working on some Janish-y analysis of Matt Harvey.
