July 21: Wednesday Morning Mets Links

MetsBlog – Reports indicate Roy Oswalt may be headed to Houston. Our sources tell us that if Oswalt lands in Philadelphia, Jayson Werth would likely be moved to Boston or Tampa Bay. Trading Werth would free up salary and allow prospect Domonic Brown to become the team’s everyday right fielder.

Real Dirty Mets Blog – Alex Cora is not happy with the amount of laughter in the Mets clubhouse.

MetsMerizedOnline – Stephen Hanks thinks the Mets should be buyers and sellers at the trade deadline.

MetsGazette – It’s official… Ollie Perez is back on the Mets. And you thought it couldn’t get any worse.

BrooklynMetFan – BMF doesn’t want to watch road games anymore.

And here’s Kerel Cooper from OnTheBlack, discussing the team’s lack of offense since the All-Star Break:

Mets Acquire Chad Cordero (Yawn)

Did you think the Mets needed help in the bullpen? How does Chad Cordero sound?

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Mets signed right-hander Chad Cordero to a minor league contract.

Rosenthal writes that the deal will be completed today. Cordero opted for free agency after being refusing a minor league assignment with the Mariners last week. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 6.52 ERA in nine appearances with Seattle. The deal reunites him with his former GM Omar Minaya, but Cordero is unlikely to be a difference-maker. (RotoWorld)

Mets Game 94: Loss to Diamondbacks

Diamondbacks 3 Mets 2

For the eleventh straight game, the Mets have been held to four runs or less.

And for the fifth time in six tries since the All-Star exhibition, the Mets lost — despite having Carlos Beltran starting in centerfield.

In fact, the Mets have yet to win a game with Beltran in the lineup; their one “win” came when Phil Cuzzi blew the call at home plate that should’ve given the Giants the victory.

What made this loss more painful was the fact the Mets were held to one run on five hits through eight innings by a lounge singer from the 1970s. Didn’t Barry Enright open for Tom Jones or Engelbert Humperdinck at a Vegas club back in the day?

Game Notes

R.A. Dickey pitched seven strong innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, but walked away with a loss. The Mets offense is really messing up Disney’s script.

The only Mets to cross the plate were Josh Thole — who hit his first MLB homer — and Angel Pagan, who blasted a solo shot of his own to make things interesting in the top of the ninth.

Pagan and Jose Reyes combined to go 4-for-8 to set the table at the top of the lineup. Unfortunately, no one sat down to dinner nor did anyone clean up.

At the beginning of the game, SNY experienced “transmission issues” and there was no video broadcast. My thought was that the Mets have been so bad lately, SNY felt none of us could bear to watch. As it turned out, Emmy-award-winning producer Bill Webb was arrested by Arizona immigration officers, who had profiled him as a result of his spending too much time in the sun earlier in the day (Webb also reportedly answered “gracias” when handed a cup of coffee moments before the arrest). Kevin Burkhardt posted bail and Webb returned in time to get the Mets back on TV screens around the fourth inning.

Next Mets Game

The Mets will try to salvage at least one game in the series finale on Wednesday night in Arizona. Jonathon Niese faces Dan Haren in a contest that begins at 9:40 PM EST.

Phillies To Acquire Oswalt?

According to ESPN columnist Jayson Stark, via Twitter:

According to sources close to the situation, a Jayson Werth trade is imminent and further, the Phillies have stepped up their efforts to acquire an arm with the news that Jamie Moyer has an elbow strain.

With Werth slumping badly lately, the Phillies are looking to dump him for pitching and to make room for phenom Domonic Brown, who is hitting .360 with 4 HR in his first 20 games in AAA. The Astros could be interested in dumping Oswalt’s salary and taking on Werth, who is likely to be a Type A free agent and net the ‘stros two first-round picks when he walks in the winter. Though, the Phils might also have to add in a young pitcher such as J.A. Happ (who was pulled in the third inning of a minor league start) or Andrew Carpenter.

More likely, though, the Phillies will be trading Werth to a team hungry for a bat (Rays?) in return for a player (Andy Sonnanstine?) or players who will then be moved for the arm or arms they need. In addition to Oswalt, the Phillies have reportedly been in discussions for Dan Haren, Jeremy Guthrie, and Ben Sheets.

Meanwhile, the Mets might be interested in Jake Westbrook.

Can you imagine a Phillies team with Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt heading their starting rotation? Yes, they are struggling all around right now but what a shot in the arm (pardon the pun) such an acquisition would be. Just as significant, the Phillies would start the 2011 season with the two best Roys in baseball.

BrooklynMetFan – BMF has a bad feeling about the state of the Mets and he feels even worse that Gary Cohen and Ron Darling are forced to take phone calls during the game.

MetsGazette – Jason Adamowicz wonders what is wrong with Mike Pelfrey.

ESPN New York – An in-depth look at former Mets pitcher (and Toms River, NJ native) Jerry DiPoto. DiPoto is currently the interim general manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

MetsMerized – Does Jerry Manuel deserve an extension? Sure, if Omar Minaya and Jeff Wilpon are the ones giving the extension, what’s the difference?

And here is Kerel Cooper from OnTheBlack, expressing his concerns over Mike Pelfrey:

Mets Game 93: Loss to Diamondbacks

Diamondbacks 13 Mets 2

Much was made of the fact that for the first time in over a year, the Mets’ lineup was as intended — in other words, intact with all the planned regulars healthy.

Unfortunately, it didn’t matter.

Mike Pelfrey was the one of the top three or four pitchers in baseball through June 25th. Since then, he has been one of the three or four worst in baseball — and that includes PONY leagues. Big Pelf dug a big hole early and the Mets never had a chance to climb out. It took him 51 pitches to get out of the first inning, and he left before finishing the second. By the time he hit the showers, his line looked like this: 1 1/3 IP, 6 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 1 K. Ouch.

Unfortunately for the Mets, the next arms brought in provided no relief. Raul Valdes helped Pelfrey increase his ERA by allowing an inherited runner to score, and Fernando Nieve allowed 5 runs on 5 hits in the 6th inning. So even if the offense showed any sign of life, it probably would not have made a difference.

Game Notes

If you read my post on Pelfrey’s minor mechanical issue, you may have noticed during this game that he was hunching over fairly often — which in turn wreaked havoc with his arm angle, release point, and command. Just as significant, his body language was negative; he looked lost and lacking in confidence. In some ways, he reminded me of bad outings by Ron Darling back in the mid-1980s, when Darling used to think too much on the mound. Pelfrey was thinking about something, and to me it looked like he was filling his mind with negative thoughts. When mechanical issues are combined with psychological issues, bad things happen. Success generally breeds confidence, which in turn follows with more success — but in Pelfrey’s case, that hasn’t happened. I wonder if he’s one of those self-sabotaging types who fear success?

The Mets scored once, in the fifth inning, after pinch-hitter extraordinaire Josh Thole walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a blistering line drive off the bat of Angel Pagan.

David Wright went 2-for-3 with a double. Did anyone notice? I didn’t.

Though “the plan” was to have a four-man outfield rotation, Jerry Manuel nixed that by announcing that Pagan would play every day. That was the best news of the day.

Speaking of, whatever happened to the idea of “easing” Carlos Beltran back into everyday duty? Wasn’t he supposed to play one day, sit the next, play two in a row, sit one, etc. ? Yes, he did get the day off on Sunday … but I don’t remember the plan being three days on, one day off. Not that it matters, and I’m sure the Mets know what they’re doing.

While we’re on the subject of players returning from the DL, Luis Castillo returned to the roster and started at 2B. He punched two of the Mets’ 8 hits and scored half their runs. His legs looked fairly healthy running the bases.

Jose Reyes returned to the lineup as well, and looked good offensively but lost and rusty on defense. He made a terrible throw on an attempted DP turn and completely missed a perfect throw to 2B by Rod Barajas on an attempted steal.

Pedro Feliciano continues to look bad, as he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk in the eighth inning. He threw the entire inning and expended 36 pitches. Yet, Jerry Manuel keeps telling us that Feliciano can pitch every day because he’s a “situational” guy and doesn’t face many guys nor throw many pitches. Did you know Feliciano has thrown 109 pitches so far in July? That’s kind of a lot for someone who is supposed to be a “LOOGY”. (For comparison, Cardinals LOOGY Trever Miller has thrown 38 pitches this month, threw 133 total in June and 118 in May.) But I’m sure overuse has nothing to do with Feliciano’s drop in effectiveness — he’s probably just not throwing the right pitches at the right times, as Manuel explained the other day.

Next Mets Game

The Mets play again in Arizona on Tuesday night at 9:40 PM EST. R.A. Dickey faces Barry Enright.

July 19: Afternoon Mets Links and Open Thread

ESPN New York – Oliver Perez is back with the Mets, though he hasn’t yet been activated. Jerry Manuel has already indicated Perez will work out of the bullpen.

ESPN New York – Luis Castillo is also back with the team, though Castillo is expected to play tonight.

Bleacher Report – Joseph DelGrippo thinks Jerry Manuel is the “stupidest” man in baseball. I’m not even sure Jerry is the “stupidest” man named Jerry or Manuel in baseball. But hey, whatever…

OnTheBlack – Kerel Cooper looks back at the San Francisco series and looks forward to the series in Arizona.

TheRoPolitans – Andrew Vazzano wonders if the Mets may need to add a bat, in addition to the quality starting pitcher that they may or may not have the money to add.

TONIGHT’S GAME
