Should the Mets Trade for Ty Wigginton?

NOTE: this post is written by MetsToday sabermetrician and minor league correspondent Matt Himelfarb. Direct your comments below to Matt.

The Orioles have a plethora of trade candidates this summer, including Ty Wiggington. Mets fans have always had a soft spot for David Wright’s predecessor, who has made a nice little career for himself as a utilityman.

There does not appear to be much room for Wiggington in Flushing. The Mets will have four equally capable outfielders when Carlos Beltran returns, Wright and Ike Davis supplanted in the corner infield positions, and Fernando Tatis and Chris Carter on the bench.

He would, however, likely represent an upgrade at second base going forward. For one, Luis Castillo has Continue reading

Saturday Morning Mets Links

Amazin’ Avenue – Eno Sarris breaks down Mike Pelfrey’s season so far. He doesn’t see Pelf as an ace, but more like a strong #2 starter – similar to a younger Derek Lowe. Very solid analysis and well worth a read.

OnTheBlack – Kerel Cooper is concerned with Johan Santana.

Brooklyn Met Fan – Adam thinks the Mets are becoming a Cinderella story.

NY Post – Dan Martin writes about Wally Backman, new manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Mets Police – Shannon Shark has more Wally Backman video from Playing for Peanuts.

And here is Orioles 2B/3B Ty Wigginton discussing his time with the Mets:

Inside Look: Orioles

You’ve watched one Orioles game but that doesn’t make you an expert, does it? So we’ve called on an Oriole expert and fellow SweetSpot Blogger Dave McNeill of Weaver’s Tantrum.

The Orioles are in a state of flux, having recently fired their manager and on the lookout for a new skipper. As such we spent some time on that subject before moving on to the players.

My questions are in bold, Dave’s answers are in the blue boxes.

Dave, thanks for sharing your insight with us.

Thanks for having me on your blog. On behalf of Oriole fans, I’d like to welcome you to Baltimore. We assume you are much more sophisticated and polite than the fans of that other New York team.

There’s another team in NY? Anyway, let’s get started … Continue reading

Mets Game 61: Win Over Orioles

Mets 5 Orioles 1

Faced with the challenge of playing MLB’s worst team, the Mets rose to the occasion and whipped the Orioles in Baltimore.

After seeing the futile O’s flailing after floaters from the fingertips of R.A. Dickey, it will be a disappointment if the Mets do anything other than sweep this series.

Game Notes

R.A. Dickey’s Disney-scripted reality movie continues, as the knuckster cruised through seven frames, allowing only one run on seven hits and one walk, striking out eight. Aren’t knuckleballers supposed to walk more batters? Dickey was in trouble only once in the contest, and wiggled out of it. He left the game after 109 pitches, but easily could’ve gone longer. In fact, if I were manager, I’d consider sending him out to the hill again on Saturday and possibly also on Sunday.

By the way, is it possible to NOT root for R.A. Dickey?

Speaking of players impossible not to root for, Chris “The Animal” Carter provided the power from the DH spot, cracking a 3-run homer to put the Mets ahead 4-0 in the fourth and essentially put the game away — the Orioles pretty much rolled over and played dead after that blast. It was Carter’s first MLB homer, which seems a long time coming.

David Wright batted in the #3 location of the lineup and responded with a 3-for-4 day, including a double and 2 RBI. Why did it take so long to guarantee him a first-inning at-bat?

Jose Reyes continued his return to form with two hits and a double of his own, while adding in his 16th stolen base of the season. His average is slowly ascending, but I’d like to see him earn a few more free passes as well.

Pedro Feliciano came on to pitch the 8th and nearly gave up a 3-run homer to Matt Wieters that would’ve changed the course of the game considerably. However, the laser beam of a drive veered to the left of the foul pole, and Wieters struck out on the following pitch. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Feliciano continues to look worn out, and threw 21 pitches in his one inning of work. Does that mean he’ll be held out of action on Saturday? Not likely, as long as pedal-to-the-metal Manuel is calling the shots.

The Mets were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Have to wonder what might’ve occurred if Gary Matthews Jr. or Fernando Tatis filled the DH role in this game. Yes, I know GMJ has been released, I’m just sayin’.

Next Mets Game

The Mets and Orioles do it again at 7:05 PM in Ripkentown. Hisanori Takahashi faces Brian Matusz.

Friday Afternoon Mets Links & Open Thread

NESN – Apparently,  only 11% of Connecticut residents identify themselves as Mets fans. No surprise there, really. But still kinda interesting, to me at least.

MetsBlog – Matt Cerrone has details on Carlos Beltran’s progress in Florida.

Queens Courier – More details on Darryl Strawberry’s new restaurant.

MetsToday – If you missed it, read about the Mets honoring a cancer survivor and learn how you can get involved.

DeadSpin – If you haven’t seen the Wally Backman Ejection Video, you might want to take a look – but be warned, there is alot of foul language. (NSFW)

TONIGHT’S GAME

Tonight, the Mets (32-28) take on the Orioles (17-43) in Baltimore. R.A. Dickey (3-0, 3.20) gets the ball for the Mets. He will be opposed by Jeremy Guthrie (3-6, 3.71).

Feel free to discuss any of this in the comments section.

Feel Good Friday: Mets Honor Cancer Survivor

Jessica Lyons of the Queens Courier has the story of Courtney Stewart, a 14-year old cancer survivor who was recently honored by the Mets at Citi Field. Courtney’s six-year-old brother John Jr. threw out the first pitch as Courtney stood with him at the pitcher’s mound.

The Stewart family won the chance to throw out the first pitch at an auction to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The LLS will hold its annual Light the Night Walk in Forest Park Queens on October 16. More information can be found at the event’s website.

Quote of the Day: “Let’s Go Get a Beer, Doc!”

wallyche2_transparency, LET'S GO GET A BEER, DOC! shirtFormer Met and current Brooklyn Cyclones manager Wally Backman is the internet’s newest legend. Seriously.

In the last 24 hours, video of Wally’s epic post-ejection rant has been picked up everywhere, including Sports Illustrated and Deadspin. The overwhelming reaction is that fans support Wally’s passion in defending his players. In the case of this video, Wally was defending outfielder Doc Brooks, who was ejected during an at-bat, following a ball call. Yeah, you read that right. A ball call.

Needless to say, I’m pretty amazed by all of this. After all, I produced the TV series from which this video clip comes from. The show is called “Playing for Peanuts” and it aired briefly on SNY.

Since the language in the video is saltier than a bucket of Morton’s Iodized Salt, I won’t embed it here. You’ll have to click the links to the websites listed above. Or you can buy the censored (bleeped) version on DVD by clicking here.

Back when it happened (2007), there were murky reports that Wally Backman had lost his mind and ruined his managerial prospects by physically attacking an umpire. It was all overblown – the footage is amazing but there is nothing approaching what Wally was accused of. Regardless, I was accused of staging the incident (not true) and Wally was accused of being out-of-control (also not true). It was a classic manager-vs-umpire confrontation, the only thing different was that Wally had agreed to wear a microphone during the season. In most cases, Wally forgot he had the microphone on him – I used to have to sprint into the dugout following games to make sure Wally didn’t accidentally destroy a microphone cable by taking off his jersey with the mic still attached. Point is, none of Wally’s words were scripted or embellished for the camera. In fact, our cameras weren’t there for Wally’s ejection the week before this incident – and I’m told it was almost as epic…

Fast forward to 2010 and Wally is set to begin managing the Brooklyn Cyclones. His career seems to be back on track and my little TV show seems to have something of a new life. Funny how things work out sometimes.

To meet the demand for all things Wally, I have updated the TV show’s line of T-shirts to include the most famous line from the video:

Special thanks to Kerel Cooper of OnTheBlack.com who posted the video a few weeks ago. He was the first one to have the video online and now everyone else is catching up to him. Nice job, Kerel!

Friday Morning Mets Links

The Daily Stache – Randy Shemanski is worried about Johan Santana, but concedes yesterday’s shaky performance could have been the result of facing the Padres twice in a row.

New York Mets Report – John Delcos wonders if the Mets will face trouble on the road. Against the Orioles and Indians, no less.

ESPN New York – Rob Parker says the Mets need to be a .500 team on the road, going forward.

OnTheBlack – Kerel Cooper gives the video treatment to who’s hot and who’s not.

Real Dirty Mets Blog – Rusty Jr. takes a look at Jason Bay’s weird start and compares it to his previous starts.

Read The Apple – The Yankees are suing the Mets for stealing their cream-pie-in-the-face idea. It’s a joke, people!

Barstool Sports – This Boston-based sports website has a new hero and it’s soon-to-be Brooklyn Cyclones manager Wally Backman!

WWTDD – Photos of Lady Gaga classing up Citi Field. I wonder if this is grounds for banishment from the ballpark? I guess the Lakers have Nicholson and the Mets have Lady Gaga? Wonderful.

And here are Jon Niese’s postgame comments after last night’s one-hitter:
