Projected 2012 Mets Lineup

Adam Rubin of ESPN-NY suggested this projected Mets lineup for 2012 — one with which manager Terry Collins more or less agreed:

The current Mets projected lineup:

Andres Torres, cf
Dan Murphy, 2b
David Wright, 3b
Ike Davis, 1b
Jason Bay, lf
Lucas Duda, rf
Josh Thole, c
Ruben Tejada, ss
Pitcher

And this is assuming that:

– Torres is not non-tendered
– Murphy doesn’t break his leg turning a DP in his first spring training workout
– Ike Davis actually returns from his foot injury
– A random Mets veteran pitcher doesn’t strangle Thole to death

I haven’t seen a Mets lineup this bad since the days of Steve Henderson, Frank Taveras, Joel Youngblood, Ron Hodges, Doug Flynn, Bruce Boisclair, and Mike Jorgensen were gracing my black and white TV on WOR / channel 9. I can still remember perpetually fidgeting with the antenna to get a semi-watchable picture … though, in retrospect, a screen full of snow and white noise was probably a blessing in disguise in those days.

But never mind my harkening back to the glory days … what do YOU think of the above lineup? Is it inspiring? Does it give you optimism, particularly when combined with a starting rotation that consists primarily of back-end starters? Post your opinion in the comments.

Ryan Braun: Nothing Good Can Come From This

By now you probably have heard that a urine sample taken from Ryan Braun contained unusually high levels of testosterone — enough that a second test was performed that indicated the testosterone in his system was synthetic; ergo, Braun technically tested positive for PEDs.

Nothing else positive can come from this news. Continue reading

Did the Mets Spend to Win?

I read and hear many empty excuses for the Mets’ current financial problems and their inability to spend enough money to field a competitive team in 2012. Toward that end, I’d like to share two comments posted to MetsBlog on Sunday.

First, from “Hodges14

… I never hear the Yankees owners complaining that they lost $70M in a season so they can’t put a competitive team on the field for years to come. Since George Steinbrenner bought the team in the early 70s he always understood that if you make winning the priority you will sell tickets and the business can sustain itself.

Second, in reply to this comment, from “4everMets“:

You hit the nail right on the head!!!! The Wilpons are NOT interested in winning!!! Imho, they only want to be good enough to sell tix and play meaningful games in Sept. Nobody has talked about how if the Wilpons were making ALL this money through Madoff how they STILL would not spend enough to get the Mets over the top instead settling for the B or C free agent instead of spending on the sure thing. This is where they wind up wasting their money.

Please post your reaction to these thoughts in the comments.

Is Jon Niese the Next Glendon Rusch?

Matthew Poliout over at NBC’s Hardball Talk blog made an interesting point regarding the significant disparity between Jon Niese’s ERA. last season (4.40) and his FIP (3.36): Continue reading

Will Mets Non-tender Andres Torres?

Before you get too attached to the Mets’ biggest position-player pickup of the offseason, you may want to brace yourself for the possibility that Andres Torres is non-tendered. Continue reading

Blog Roundup: Winter Meetings

For those of you who have lived under or a rock, or have a life and a job or something, here’s your week in review in blog form.  Yes, the baseball winter meetings took place this week in Dallas, TX, and the results were bigger than J.R.’s hat (or something…fill in your own Texas cliche).  The Mets lost Jose Reyes, gained a bunch of relief pitchers, and probably sampled some fine barbecue at Hard 8 or Pappas Brothers or somewhere.
  • Metstradamus says one thing we’ve learned is that home town discounts are going the way of the gutta-percha.
  • Ted Berg and Matt Cerrone talk about Jose Reyes.
  • Rising Apple wonders if trading Jon Niese makes sense.
  • Metsblog promotes the Mets’ annual coat drive coming up on December 14th.
  • The 7 Line has a new message for Mets management in convenient t-shirt form.
  • Midwestropolitan sums up the Reyes signing in a nutshell.  (The Reyes signing says, “No, this is me in a nutshell.  Help!  I’m in a nutshell!  How did I get in this nutshell?  And where did this bloody great big nutshell come from anyway?”

In a nutshell, keep checking out Mets Today.

Why the Mets Were Right to Let Reyes Leave

Given all the information available as of December 8th, 2011, I’m willing to declare that the Mets were right to let Jose Reyes, arguably their best homegrown superstar this side of Tom Seaver, leave for the Miami Marlins.

With or without Reyes, barring some epic miracle, the Mets will not be contenders in 2012. That much is certain. Continue reading
